Music Review: Dead Reckoning ~Marit Peters

An amazing collection of original songs informed by what I presume to be Marit's personal expereinces. Marit's voice is extraordinary; you'll be especially moved by the song "Noah's Ark."
Description of Dead Reckoning
Dead Reckoning is a diverse batch of songs, ranging from Mountain-friendly radio pop - to trip hop - to melancholy, jazz-tinged ballads. This intelligent, moody collection falls smack in the middle of Sarah McLachlin, Fiona Apple, and Portishead.While Marit Peters's intensely personal songs will appeal to fans of Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, there is a poetic quality to Peters's lyrics that sets her apart as a songwriter's songwriter, much in the tradition of Paul Simon circa Bridge over Troubled Water. On the gently swaying ballad "Theater," Peters relates to the wintry fate of the cherry tree with a soulful vocal performance that at its emotional zenith recalls Aretha Franklin. On the heavy-hearted "Let the Happiness In," Peters pays homage to a lost friend or relative--as does much of Dead Reckoning--and with a poet's deft hand discovers hope in the despairingly cold and stark world that surrounds her. Like Amos, Peters is an accomplished pianist who summons a tonal foundation that perfectly supports the emotional core of the songs. To round out the album, she surrounds herself with a topnotch band that follows every step she takes with commendable restraint and takes care to put the songs before their own highly accomplished musicianship. The result is a mature debut by an artist who is in control of her craft and ready to take it to a wider audience. --Michael Wells
