Music Review: Seminal bluegrass album

Like it or not, many listeners found their way to the great recordings of Ralph Stanley, Jim & Jesse, and Bill Monroe via the unexpected offramp of the Grateful Dead; that is, because this record had the name Jerry Garcia attached to it (never mind the other great players in the band), it became a must-own. (For other examples of this phenomenon, see "Merle Saunders, career of.") That said, this really is an album that captures the spirit of bluegrass's energy, and it is possible that Garcia, in between Dead projects, unwittingly made things easier for J. D. Crowe, Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss ...
