Music Review: A riddle, wrapped in a jelly roll, inside an enigma, stuffed in a bong

David Crosby must be the most successful singer to never have a hit. Actually, "Eight Miles High" was a huge hit. Unfortunately, it was Gene Clark's song (Clark's only true hit) and is completely out of place here, just as "Revolution" would be out of place on a Paul McCartney anthology. However, the B-side of EMH, "Why?" is also a terrific song, is a David Crosby song, and would have been an ideal opener for this anthology. "Why?" summarizes Crosby's philosophical vision in a single word. And why is Crosby's only Byrds A-side, "Lady Friend" not included here. It's a beautiful song, and one of Crosby's best. The other two Byrds songs are excellent (especially "Everybody Has Been Burned"), but his six albums (plus) with the Byrds would be better represented by four (or maybe more) excellent Crosby songs, rather than by two excellent Crosby songs and one awesome Clark song. It's a shame "Draft Morning" couldn't have been included also, but Crosby's involvement in and approval of the final recording of that song is questionable. Similar to EMH, "Wooden Ships" is a Stephen Stills song with a few peripheral Crosby lyrics added. WS does not accurately illustrate David Crosby's specific musical vision, and should not have been included. The CSN album After the Storm (1994) was a very underrated album and should have been represented here by at least one song (e.g. "Camera"). Otherwise, Crosby's CSNY, CSN, CN, & solo recordings are nicely covered by this compilation. However, nearly all of those tracks, 18 of 35 tracks on discs 1 & 2, were included in the far superior CSN box set (and the three Byrds tracks are in the Byrds box set). Disc 3 might have appealed to someone other than hardcore Crosby fans had it been released as a seperate album. When Crosby phases into his vocal netherworld, it's nearly impossible to resist going along for the ride. But, although this collection is full of netherworld delights, the average listener would be better served with Byrds or CSN recordings, or even Crosby's first solo album. This collection is awfully good, but almost exclusively for diehards.

Career spanning 3 CD David Crosby box set spotlights the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's solo stand-outs and classics with legendary groups including The Byrds, CSN and CSNY, plus one full disc of previously unreleased material.He's always received second billing to Stephen Stills in Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and once played third fiddle to Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark in the Byrds, but there is no doubt that David Crosby is one of the true originals of a folk-rock style that has paralleled his 40-year career, which is celebrated on this three-disc set of hits and near misses, demos, and outtakes. The first two CDs run chronologically, from the Byrds' "Eight Miles High" (which Crosby co-wrote) through his '70s and '80s solo records to "Through Here Quite Often," from his 2004 album with Graham Nash. Crosby was the draftsman of the transcendental harmonies that defined both of his bands, his plaintive vocals generally serving as a complement to the others'. But he takes the lead on this 52-song collection's greatest moments: his chilling falsetto on "Music Is Love" (from his 1971 debut solo release); a call out to his dying mother on "Carry Me" (1975's Wind on the Water, with Nash), and "Yvette in English," a 1993 collaboration with Joni Mitchell (Thousand Roads). Some selections swing and miss--"Hero," co-written with Phil Collins in 1993, and a few recorded in the late '90s with CPR, featuring his son James Raymond--but Voyage recuperates with disc three's 16 previously unreleased tracks. The jewel? "Cowboy Movie," a 10:57 opus from 1970 featuring both Neil Young and Jerry Garcia on lead guitar. --Scott Holter
