Music Review: Diverse And Brillant Collection

This album was my first opportunity to hear Dave Von Ronk and I was not disappointed. But casual folk fans used to the vocals of singers like Joan Baez and Judy Collins may find themselves in for a suprise. Dave has a sparse and rough hewn sound, rawer and less commercial than even Dylan. The material on here ranges from blues to traditional jazz, WC Fields to Bertolt Brecht. "Shaving Cream" is hilarious as is "Way Down In Lubyanka Prison". Dave was a Trotskyist but one willing to satirize the way other Communists were constantly shifting their ideology to match the Kremlin's party line. Hey, any leftist with a sense of humor is alright with me. Oh, and I can't overlook his stunning cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now". His stark reading provides a whole new angle on this classic song.
His gritty aesthetic and radical politics makes him seem almost like a forerunner of punk rock, though I doubt few punks have even heard of the guy. Dave wasn't a prolific songwriter. But his unique approach to the songs he covered was powerful. It's a shame he wasn't better known in his own lifetime. But maybe posthumous releases like this this will bring his music to a broader public. He is certainly an artist worth remembering.
