Music Reviews of Some Devil [Limited Edition w/ Bonus CD]Music Review: Dave going on a solo from his band, and doing a great job Rating: 5 Stars
First off, even though it's been written about a thousand times before, realize that this is NOT Dave Matthews BAND. This cd, and the bonus one, are quite different. Dave shows off his vocal talents here, making do with close to no background additions on some of the tracks, sometimes with very few instruments. Any one who saw his solo on Charlie Rose will understand some of what this CD is about. He brings in chords and melodies that you do not hear on so many modern pop and rock songs. This CD will not please everyone, especially those who like the more rock-like Everyday album. In some respects I can at times picture him and the people he is playing with in a small room in a comfy lounge, not a big stage. This definately was a cd I was looking forward to and was not disappointed. The second cd, the bonus 5 tracks, shows Dave's ability being live, to bring out melodies and his songs with his voice and his guitar. Not jam material, but very nice none-the-less.
Music Review: The Devil Made Me Buy This Album Rating: 2 Stars
So what do you get when you put Dave Matthews, Tim Reynolds and Trey Anastasio in the same room? $10 worth of dissappointment. All the songs sound like stuff they've done before, or we've heard from other artists. So Damn Lucky sounds like a reprise of You Never Know from the Busted Stuff album. Up and Away is No Woman No Cry. Baby sounds like a tune from David Byrne Finite=Alright from the album Feelings. As for the rest of the songs, it's hard to tell when one ends and a new one begins. I actually had to look at my cd player to see what track it was on. I thought it was bad when Will Smith sampled Rock the Casbah, but Dave has sunk to a new low with sampling nursery rhymes. I do like the bonus stuff with Tim, if they really wanted to get into marketing, the should have sold it seperately. Some Devil will make a great coaster for your beverages. If Dave had recorded these songs with Roi, Carter, Boyd and Stephan, at least the music would have been interesting.
Music Review: So Damn Lucky. Rating: 5 Stars
I hold my head aside and listen to Dodo, So Damn Lucky. I couldnt get past these first two. My goodness, the tune, sound of his voice when he says: "Oh, my God...wait and see." I am uplifted, on the tongue of Dave and the voice, the magical lyric that unfolds. Fresh after a break-up, finding spirituality, not knowing why I had wasted so much time, not knowing what my now time would be like, I listened. I heard me. I heard what my ex should have been singing or what the healed-me would say now to him: Oh my God, wait and see. To say those things and wish him well in his new life, wherever it leads and goes. But So Damn Lucky was the second song of repeat, the first Dodo I played for hours and had to move around in the house to keep from sitting still, afraid the music and lyrics would make me cry or float.Dave is a gem to a writer. A gem to have and glow for all. There is no perfection. You seem to not care at all when Dave is around.
Music Review: True Dave - What a Great CD Rating: 4 Stars
I'm a DMB fan, but not a die hard. And I gained a newfound respect for Dave when he hosted a musical round on Austin City Limits, featuring the like of Emmylou Harris, Buddy & Julia Miller, and Patty Griffin. In an age of fabricated bands, Dave is a true musician and this album only serves to emphasize that fact. There is no brass section, nor poppy violin...it's just Dave and a few, albeit very talented, musician pals.Gravedigger, Grey Blue Eyes, An' Another Thing, and Too High are the songs that really caught my attention. But overall, the album is a joy to listen to from beginning to end. It's actually a really great thing to pop into the CD player on a rainy Sunday morning. Another reviewer used the word "meander" which is exactly what this album does...it meanders through a quite journey of blues, soul, and Dave's own african/pop/introspective mix. All in all - a great investment for those DMB fans who appreciate Dave for his talent.
Music Review: Lone wolf Rating: 4 Stars
Dave Matthews and company have always been known for improvisational jamming and meandering riffs. With 2001's "Everyday," the band geared themselves toward more tight, focused songs and more prominent guitar bursts. Come to find out, that was less the bands' doing than it was of producer Glen Ballard. With Dave's first official solo album "Some Devil," Mr. Matthews is back to writing focused songs on his own terms, with a little help from his friends Tim Reynolds and Trey Anastasio of Phish. The majority of "Some Devil"'s songs are dirges disguised as firing synapses of hope and love. They are also many of the best songs Dave Matthews has ever written recorded. Known for being an eclectic live performer, Dave will surely allow these songs to flower onstage. Highlights include one of the greatest songs Dave has ever written in "Save Me, "the anguished "An' Another Thing" and the beautiful "Baby."
