Music reviews of Before These Crowded Streets

Music Review: I said "Under the Table..." was their best. I lied!
Rating: 5 Stars

This is by far the best Dave Matthews studio album. It just flat out rocks. It takes the songs from their first two studio albums, blends them together and much more than that. The album is wonderful. It has the perfect blend of hard, disturbingly beuatiful songs, and the happy, fun songs to listen to. The biggest difference between this album and Dave's other albums is the emotional depth in his lyrics. He wrote some awesome songs on this album (i.e. "The dreaming Tree"). This is a great CD, but the songs themselves stand alone wonderfully as well.

Pantala Nagga Pamapa- (10 of 10)- although only thirty seconds long, it is the coolest intro to an album. It's so much fun, and it sets the mood for the whole listening experience. And then, is has a segue into...

Rapunzel (9 of 10)- This song s great, although it does get somewhat monotonous. It is so much fun to listen to. It is such a cool love song, and Dave wrote some pretty good lyrics to go along with the intoxicating beat.

Last Stop (10 of 10)- Once again, this song, too, gets repetitive, but Dave's brilliant (and I do mean brilliant) lyrics make up for that. I heard that this is an anti-war song, and I can see that, but this is one of his darker songs. The first time I heard it I was amazed. It ranks right up their with the darkest of Dave songs (bested only by "Halloween"). This song is also great live. I highly recommend listening to the version on "Live In Chicago."

Don't Drink the Water- (10 of 10)- This is another dark Dave song, but it is brilliant. This was the song that got me into Dave and it truly is a great song. "Don't drink the water, there's blood in the water." I love that line, and it perfectly displays Dave's message about the killing of native during the colonization of the forests. Check out Alanis Morissette's back up vocals on this one. She's an awesome touch to the song.

Stay(Wasting Time)-(10 0f 10)-This is the summer song. I listen to it non-stop in the summer. I love it. It is a fun song to listen to. It reminds me of how fun it is to sit around, do nothing and have fun doing it. I love popping this song in and just grooving to it, sitting by the pool.

Halloween- (11 of 10)- This is one of my all time favorite Dave songs. It is sooooooo cool. The lyrics are hard to find, but if you can find them, you'll see that some version say that he actually says the f-word. I love Dave's yelling, and his dark mood, and the Kronos Quartet does a great job on the strings. They play hauntingly and beautifully (as they did on the "requiem for a dream" soundtrack). They go with Dave's awesome music and lyrics so well. This is one of the many highlights of the CD.

The Stone- (10 of 10)- Kronos Quartet joins Dave again on this song. The lyrics are great, and although you really can't tell what it's about, it is still a great song to listen to. It is musically magical and intoxicating, with an awesome intro and an even better ending. I love the lyrics: "It weighs on me, as heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold."

Crush- (10 of 10)- Stefan Lessard plays an awesome bass in this song. This song shows you his true talent, as "Two Step" did for Carter, "Tripping Billies" and "Warehouse" for Boyd, "Seek Up" for Leroi and "#41" for Dave. This song is great and it gets better each time. It is a great love song, and the lyrics are intoxicating. "...sitting, smoking, feeling high." I love this song.

The Dreaming Tree- (12 of 10)- This song is impossible to beat. It is the most amazing listening experience you will have. It is by far my favorite Dave song. The lyrics read like poetry and they flow through your body like a drug. I LOVE this song. The lyrics are wonderful. "Standing here, the old man says to me, long before these crowded streets, here stood my dreaming tree." I heard this song for the first time, then skipped back on the CD player, listened to it again and again. "Remembered Mother's words, their beneath the tree, no matter what the world, you'll always be my baby. Mommy come quick, the dreaming tree has died, the air is growing thick, a fear he cannot hide, the dreaming tree has died." If you listen to only one song on this CD make it be this one.

Pig- (9 of 10)- This kid of has the same message as "Tripping Billies" but without the fantasticness (I don't think that's a word) of that song. It is still a great song.

Spoon (9 of 10)- Check out more Alanis on this song. While you would think it would be out of place, Dave placed her so strategically into the song, you hardly notice the change. It's great.

It has been great to watch Dave evolve as a song-writer. He did it again with "Busted Stuff" and even "Everyday," even though "Everyday" wasn't their greatest CD. This is a great CD and it has one of the most eclectic mixes of songs that I have ever heard. This is a must for every DMB fan and every person who just wants to get into their awesome, undeniably magical music.

Description of Before These Crowded Streets

11 tracks including DON'T DRINK THE WATER. Drill hole into barcode. Scuffs on disc will not affect play - disc graded onlu GOOD. Includes Merchandise Volume 7 catalog. SM.
The Dave Matthews Band moves its music forward by increments on Before These Crowded Streets. While the album offers more of the folkish melodies and vaguely internationalist rhythms that made this Charlottesville, Virginia, group a major record and concert draw, it also finds them adding new colorings to the mix. Alanis Morissette guests on two cuts, "Spoon" and the disc's first single, "Don't Drink the Water," and banjo whiz Bela Fleck sits in, too. More interesting, though, is the modernist string arrangement played by the Kronos Quartet on the driving "Halloween." Matthews's obvious hopes to lead something other than a jam band are at least partly fulfilled here; at the same time, Streets should keep his customers satisfied.--Rickey Wright
