Music reviews of Live at Luther College

Music Review: Absolutely Amazing!
Rating: 5 Stars

Being a huge fan of the enitre Dave Matthews Band, I was very reluctant to pick up this CD because it was accoustic. I'm glad I did. The set list of this album is spectacular and the way the songs are done give so much more meaning to the songs Dave fans know and love. There are points in this CD when Tim and Dave just blow me away with their guitar playing. You have to pinch yourself and to remind yourself that their are only TWO guitars. This album is amazing.

One Sweet World (10 of 10)- Great song with. Dave really does something more with this song, which was great already. It is so magical.

#41 (11 of 10)- This song is fantastic. The feeling of the song is fealt so much better here, and the guitar playing is spectacular. It is such a great song. It makes you sad, it makes you happy, it makes you feel every emotion it was meant to convey. It is by far Dave's best song.

Tripping Billies (10 of 10)- I wasn't sure if this song was going to be cool without the power from the whole band. I was wrong, this song is spectacular. The "Eat, drink and be merry" quote comes off as even more powerful. This song is magical.

Jimi Thing (10 of 10)- This song is realyl good, too. It is amazing how Dave and Tim can take a song that was so popular with the whole band and make it into something new that is just as amazing.

Satellite- (10 of 10)- This being one of my all tiem favorite Dave songs, I knew it had to be good for me to like it accousitc. Dave and Tim literally sound like a whole band playing this song and it is magical.

Crash Into Me- (10 of 10)- A classic Dave song. This version focuses so much on the lyrics, and hearing it on this CD lets you realize just how creative the lyrics are.

Deed is Done (10 of 10)- The guitar playing on this song is absolutely amazing. It has a funny intro, too.

Lover Lay Down (10 of 10)- This is one of the most amazing love songs I have ever hear, and this version is no exception. The music is great, and the lyrics go along so well with it.

What Would You Say (10 of 10)- This is another song I didn't think would be very godo accoustic, but it is. The lyrics are so goofy, but so much fun.

Minarets (10 of 10)- The best version of this song by far. It is so cool to hear Dave and Tim just play their hearts out. i love this song.

Cry Freedom (11 of 10)- Fantastic lyrics! I liked this song before, but hearing it here was amazing. These are some of the best lyrics Dave has ever written, and with a lot of this song riding on them, he runs with that idea. This song is fantastic.

Dancing Nancies (11 of 10)- Great fun song. The lyrics are very funky and there is a funny intro involving the Pink Panther.

Typical Situation (11 of 10)- This is one of my favorite Dave songhs of all time and this is a great version of it. It beats the "Red Rocks" version and is great. The lyrics are pure magic.

Stream- (11 of 10)- Time tears it up on this song. He is a truly, truly talneted guitarist.

Warehouse (11 of 10)- Beats the "Recently" accoustic version by a mile. It has so much emotion in it. The intro is very cool, and both Dave and Tim play very well.

Christmas Song (11 of 10) I love this song. The story is classic, and the lyrics are very good. The song it touching on a certain level.

Seek Up (11 of 10)- This song is one of my all time Dave favorites, too. The lyrics are so clever and the accoustic guitars sound amazong in this song. This song is very good.

***From Typical Situation to Seek Up is the strongest part of the CD, in my opinion, its an amazing stretch of music***

Say Goodbye (10 of 10)- Great song, good lyrics and the music is very good. I realyl like this song.

Ant Marching (10 of 10)- This is a classic Dave song, and it is very good on this CD, it just cna never match what the whole band does with it. It's good, though, great actually.

Little Thing (10 of 10)- A good new track. It's ashame it's never been on an album because its really cool. They two play really well.

Halloween (11 of 10)- This song is great, and the lyrics are dark. This is a strong point of the CD. I never thought this song could be good w/o the drums and violin, but Dave and Tim tear it up. This song is great.

Granny (10 of 10)- This song is much better tha the version on Listener Supported. It is so cool. The lyrics are creative and Dave and Tim tear it up on the guitars.

Two Step (11 of 10)- One of my all time favorites, and while it can't beat the live versions off of "Listener Supported" or "Folsom Field" it does beat the version on "Red Rocks" The lyrics in this song are great and Dave and Tim play really well.

Lastly, this CD was more than I expected. I would reccomend it to anyone. It is a great CD with great songs and great music. it takes the songs that made Dave famous and made them into songs that are much more than simply pop music hits. They are pure magic.

Description of Live at Luther College

Unplugged and set apart from his bandmates, Dave Matthews is transformed from a fusion rocker to something of a fusion folkie. Indeed, this two-disc, two-man concert recording (cut in Iowa in the winter of 1996 and shelved for nearly three years) posits the South African-born bandleader less as a Blues Traveler fellow traveller than a dexterous, jazz-inflected minstrel in the tradition of Tim and Jeff Buckley, Terry Callier and Ellen McIlwaine. As with those considerably less-successful performers, multi-platinum Matthews is enticed to soar ever higher by his considerable vocal prowess. Ultimately, Matthews takes his tunes in dizzying directions because he can! All those exhibitions of elasticity have earned Matthews disdain in less-is-more circles. Here, however, more than ably complemented by frequent DMB guest and fellow Charlottesville, Virginia, denizen Tim Reynolds, Matthews virtually bursts through 23 tunes that leave his audience wanting more. They needn't worry: even his worst critics wouldn't accuse Matthews of being stingy when it comes to music. --Steven Stolder
