Music Review: THE DVD IS WORTH THE PRICE ALONE

The 2 CD's that come with it are decent. The 19:00 version of Two Step wasted a lot of space though. Especially since the Central Park CD also had an 18:56 version. With these two releases being back to back, it just seems foolish not to mix it up a bit. I would've MUCH preferred the 14:06 version of #41 in its place. It's been quite a while since we've had a good live version of that song. The rest of the track selection is good, with The Song That Jane Likes, Fool To Think, Kit Kat Jam and Lie In Our Graves being nice surprises. Incidentally, they are selling a 6 CD set on the official DMB website that has every track from all 3 nights.
OK, now to the DVD. 9 main tracks, 3 short documentaries and the Grace Is Gone montage video. Track selection for the DVD is outstanding. I was going to go through each track, but I'll just give a few quick highlights. The intro to Ants Marching is fun. Seek Up, how can you go wrong with that one? You can't. Tripping Billies! We don't hear that one enough, but here's high energy version for us. The documentaries aren't Earth shattering, especially for fans familiar with the band, but they're cool. Matter of fact, as a fan I was a little disappointed that they didn't have the guys talking some more. The Grace Is Gone video at the end is pretty nice also. As far as the multiple angles feature, it's only on Ants Marching and What Would You Say. Pretty fun, I like watching my "Carter Cam", but they have these 4 annoying little camera selector boxes on the left side of the screen the whole time. Mind you, this isn't on the regular play through of these tracks, it's on a special feature menu. These little windows are semi-transparent, but they're still annoying. I suppose the point is for PC playback or remotes that don't have an ANGLE button.
But the highlight of it all is Halloween on the DVD. Wow. I'm not going to go so far as to say I'd pay full price just for this one track, but it is by FAR the best 9:06 in this entire set. You know it's going to be good when you start off with Carter performing a solo. And I hate to spoil it, but he's playing the toms with HIS HANDS. It's great to watch, and since I'm a drummer I can watch that man do his thing 24/7. Once they get into the song itself, the energy is incredible. If it doesn't give you goosebumps all over listening to it, check your pulse...you might be dead.
Oh, back to the 6 CD set on their official site...I decided that buying this here set just to get the DVD for the $20 was worth it. So I'm going to buy the 6 CD set also. Yeah, the 14 tracks I already have from this set will be duplicated, but I want the DVD versions to listen to without hassling with extracting the audio from the DVD itself. That and there are about 55 total tracks on the 6 CD set. So I'll pay for the extra 41 tracks, no problem. It's a virtual box set of all their songs live. And honestly, who puts on a better show than DMB?
The 4 stars is because the Two Step instead of #41 irritated me. The band ALWAYS gets 5 stars.
