Music Review: Some smooth, some jazzy, some background music, all good

When I started getting into jazz a few years back, Dave Grusin was one of those names that I was vaguely aware of but didn't know anything about. The library had a lot of his CD's (which can be either a good sign or a bad sign), and Migration was one of the ones I brought home and actually enjoyed. But after taking it back to the library, I forgot about it. Then I tried to buy one and the seller couldn't make good on it, but eventually, I got around to buying another copy. I'm glad I did. While some of Grusin's stuff can be pretty fluffy and boring (like Amparo), this manages to skirt that problem. It isn't all that jazzy, but it definitely has a jazzy edge to it. At times it sounds like background music to a Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom episode, but the effect doesn't last and doesn't distract from the music. The production is first rate, and the songs are interesting and vary in style and theme from one another, keeping the listener on his or her toes. (One of the best songs from this CD, Punta Del Sol, was recently remade by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band on Act Your Age. That version of the song is really hot and while it may show Grusin's "lightness" when executing the music, it proves his genius in writing it.) Migration might get a little boring after a while, but all in all, I enjoy a touch of Grusin once in a while, and this is the CD to scratch that itch.
