Music reviews of Daughtry

Music Review: Amazing album from the first song to the last song
Rating: 5 Stars

I was planning on purchasing Chris's first album because I was a big fan on the show, but I am totally blown away by how amazing this album is. I am actually more of a country music fan than rock, but there is something amazing about the combination of Chris's voice and the powerful lyrics of this album. It is definitely one that I will play over and over until I drive my children crazy. The album is neither too heavy or too much pop, it strikes an amazing balance that I doubted Chris would be able to do. But somehow he did. When I first listened to the album, I tried to figure out which songs would be released and I could easily see about six of these being hit singles. There is not a weak or "filler" song on this album. Some reviewers have commented the songs sound alike, but that is not true at. Each song has a distinctive musical and lyrical feel to it. This album was recorded with studio musicians because of time, but the band DAUGHTRY will be performing at the concerts. I had the privilege of seeing the band in concert in Raleigh in October and was very impressed with the talent of the musicians in the band. The CD jacket includes the lyrics, an additional picture of Chris, and a picture of the large DAUGHTRY tatoo on Chris's back. The thank you page of this album is especially touching and heartfelt. Die hard chris fans will love his thank you to his "crazy, hardcore, diehard fans". His dedication to his wife and children is also very sweet. The writing credits on this album are also worth noting. Chris was the solo writer for 3 of the songs; Home, Breakdown, and Gone. He is not listed as a writer on only 2 tracks; Feels Like Tonight and What About Now. He is a co-writer on the rest of the songs. It is also worth noting that Brett Young who is listed as a co-writer on "It's Not Over" is Ace Young (fellow American Idol Season 5 contestant and a good friend of Chris's).

The album opens with two radio friendly tracks that will have you singing along by the end of the song; "It's Not Over" and "Used To". The next song "Home" had me in tears when I heard it. It is a beautiful ballad that was written by Chris before he went on the show when he was thinking about what it would be like to be away from his family. He stated in an interview that he wrote it while sitting on his couch in 10 minutes and hasn't changed a thing. The music, the lyrics and the feeling in this song are amazing. This song will appeal to most everyone and I will not be surprised if this is the biggest hit from the album. The fourth song ""Over You" is definitely a song that makes you want to put your sunroof down, drive your car fast with your hair blowing and sing as loud as you can. It is about getting over a breakup, but is a very uplifting and empowering song. Crashed is heavier than some of the tracks and rock fans will love this one. It has a hard beat and "feel" to it, but non metal heads will still like it. When I heard it live, it was a bit "heavier" than the studio version. "Feels Like Tonight" is another radio ready song with a strong hook. Interestingly this is one of the two songs that he is not listed as a co-writer on and I think that this song has a different "vibe" to it than the the others. Although it's good, it doesn't have the depth and emotion that is throughout the rest of the songs.

"What I Want" features the guitarist, Slash and is simply an amazing song. I hope this song is released as a single because it would be a huge hit. This song makes you want to pump your fist and yell. It is heavier than some of the other tracks. However, I am not a heavy metal fan and I LOVE this song. When Daughtry sang this song at the concert we attended, my husband (who came to the concert because he loves me) started yelling like a 16 year old (we are long past 16) "This is a hit. I love this song. Whooohoooo!" I believe that the next track "Breakdown" is my absolute favorite from this album and will probably be one of my favorite all time songs. This song simply haunts me. There is something about this song that touches my soul and is hard to put into words. You can feel the pain and the strength in the both the lyrics and his voice on this song. It is actually a compilation of two songs (Breakdown and Conviction) he wrote for his pre-idol band Absent Element. This song starts out soft and gets quite a bit heavier by the end of it. The guitar on this song is simply amazing.

"Gone" is a rock ballad that showcases the strong lyrics and Chris's unique voice. This is the only song that I only "like it" instead of "love it". The tenth song on the album "There and Back again" was co-written with Brent from Shinedown. It is the heaviest song on the album. When my husband heard it, he thought it was a Red Hot Chilli Pepper song. It is a great, classic rock song. Rock fans will LOVE this song and it will probably be their favorite song on the album. "All These Lives" is unique in content (about child abduction/evil), but is one of the most powerful and eye opening songs that I have heard. It will have you both crying and singing at the same time. The final track on this album "What About Now" is probably the most beautiful part of the entire album. Chris's voice is so filled with emotion and passion. He sings this song much softer than the other tracks and it has a very powerful effect, especially in contrast with the other songs. I hope that this song is released as a single because it will have wide appeal and could be a huge hit.

Overall, I highly recommend this album. It will have you crying, singing along, and pumping your fist. All on the first listen. On subsequent listens you will pick up a lot of the subtleties in the lyrics and the music and this will be the CD you reach for time and again. This is simply an amazing amazing album.

Description of Daughtry

DAUGHTRY DAUGHTRY
Chris Daughtry starts his first post-American Idol disc with a song whose title reviewers coast to coast will be grateful for: "It's Not Over." What an understatement. For the Idol-watching rock fan's money, nobody--not even Southern-fried heartthrob Bo Bice in season four--stormed the stage with more raw talent. That it translates so well to a solo disc (Daughtry was recorded with studio musicians; future discs will include a Daughtry-assembled band) proves all he needed was a little prodding, the kind the tube has gotten so good at. Here are a dozen songs that'll flick your rock & roll switch, whether you're a Creed fan, a club kid, or a mambo king: "Used To" and "Over You," a couple of early tracks, ought to arrive bundled with a road map they're so highway sing-along-ready, and "Feels Like Tonight" screws the lid on the premise that Daughtry can deliver a punchy pop-rock song without flinching. Elsewhere, the North Carolina family man lets his inner (and outer, actually) goatee- and eyeliner-type guy rip: his built-for-the-hard-stuff voice bites down appealingly on "Breakdown," a dark serenade to mental health, and also on "What I Want," an '80s-style fist-pumper featuring Slash. The loud mad dash of those songs leads to a midtempo wind-down ("All These Lives," "What About Now"), but as a mix, it works. Daughtry is a man of many moods--contemplative, explosive, insistent, humble. No matter which pokes through on a given song, he steadies it to a place as honest as it is accessible. Rare is the rocker who lays out so broad an on-ramp. --Tammy La Gorce
