Music reviews of Dead Serious

Music Review: HORRIBLY UNDERRATED GEM
Rating: 5 Stars

Man, I can't tell you how cool it was to find this album. It's not candy-coated cheesy pop-rap crap [...] that they pan out these days. These 2 MCs, Dre and Skoob (no not Dr. Dre) have some of the most zaniest, craziest, catchiest rhymes ever. They're just so unique. For example, they throw in a lot of "iggity" ends onto their words and have pop-culture references coming out the wazoo such as "no more pork sausages mom", a song called Dum-Dums (remember those lollipops?), "if yer happy and ya know it clap ya hands", etc. It goes on and on, I don't know how they kept thinking of them but they do. I think it's pretty damn amazing how they keep up with themselves and have amazing flow. They also have nice beats to go along with them, not those half-@$$ed lame obnoxious ones that are in rap now. Yeah don't expect to really get the party "krunked" or whatever with this album. This is only for people with good taste in rap. It's very casual and laid back, these guys don't take themselves too seriously which I see as a VERY good thing. So I guess it makes the album title a little ironic. Here's a brief rundown of the songs.

1- Mic Checka 10/10
Nice beat goin' on here, goes perfectly with the song here which of course is littered with pop culture references like Hawaiian punch, goldilocks, flintstones, etc. They're talkin about how theyre pretty good MCs on stage.

2- Jussummen 10/10 SWEET song, once again the brilliant pop culture filled flow. They're being pretty modest here calling themselves "Jus some men thats on the mic". Very nice.

3- They Want EFX 50/10 This is THE rap song dude. This was I guess the "hit" off the album. It had a pretty cool video w/ the guys in a dark tunnel. You just have to listen to it.

4- Looseys 7/10 all right song, one of my least favorites though.
If I remember correctly, according to the Dave Chapelle show a loosey is a single loose cigarette. Not sure if that's what they're talking about though.

5- Dum Dums- Yeah those lollipops ruled. But anyway, pretty good song and probably the slowest on the album. I think it's about a chick that Dre or Skoob wanted to get with but couldn't. And GASP! almost no pop-culture references!

6- East Coast - 9/10 A nice song representing the place where real hip-hop was born- the East Coast. The "iggities" return strong in this song. Also talking about private benjamins, terminator, etc. Includes a sample of the original Rappers Delight by Sugarhill gang.

7- If Only 8/10 This song has a cool melody that makes me feel I'm in an old super hero movie. Yeah don't ask.

8- Brooklyn to T-Neck 9/10 Cool tune with one of funkier beats on the album, this is one of the songs you would be able to dance to if you really wanted to.

9- Klap Ya Handz 9/10 A nice upbeat track here with something like a crowd roaring and whistling that's incorporated into the beat, once again these guys show how unique they are. Another decent song to dance too. One of my faves on the album.

10- Straight out the Sewers 8/10 In this song the boys are a little more louder and in your face while rapping. It kinda drowns out the beat which is ok since it's not one of the best on the cd. Has a cool car crash sound effect in the middle.

I'm telling you people, I just can't get enough from these guys. Dre and Skoob along with all the other early 90s/80s rap acts makes me not so ashamed to like rap. I will now proceed to spread the word of quality rap onto the unlucky misguided souls who listen to FIDDY and other losers.
