Music Review: The "Little Bird" Sings Again (Screechily)

The title of my review alludes to the surname of Marco Uccellini (ca. 1603-1680), one of many unjustly neglected composers featured on this CD, UN VIAGGIO MUSICALE ("A Musical Voyage)" with Il Giardino Armonico. On the page, this disc seemed like a wonderful idea. Early 17th-century Italian instrumental music remains little known to non-specialists. As a student of the baroque violin, I have played some of the composers included here. What a pleasant surprise to see them brought all together on one CD!
Sadly, the performances didn't meet my expectations. Italian period-instrument players are known for their spontaneity and passion and for taking risks. These young Italians make one choice that I cannot comfortably go along with - using the pitch of Hz=460 (a semitone higher than modern pitch) which as used in some parts of northern Italy in the 17th century. To me this is a case of being authentic to a fault, as the unfamiliar pitch can feel uncomfortably high to the ears, especially ears that have perfect pitch; it adds an unwanted tension and strain to the sound of the performances, making the music sound jittery and high-strung. The members of Il Giardino play in an exuberant style, choosing fast tempos, using more vibrato than most baroque specialists, and adding a lot of improvised ornamentation. They do not make a priority of being polished, and they sometimes sacrifice clarity to enthusiasm, though their style is arguably appropriate to the extravagance of the early Baroque. But in my opinion this sort of repertoire is much better served by the ensemble Romanesca on their Harmonia Mundi disc entitled CURIOSE E MODERNE INVENTONI featuring the music of Biagio Marini.

Baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico take a step away from Bach, Biber, and Vivaldi to create this intriguing disc of lesser-heard 17th century compositions from Italy. These short instrumental pieces--Dario Castello's Sonata IV is the longest, at over seven minutes, while Monteverdi's Sinfonia de Il ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria clocks in at under a minute--were all composed during the era of Monteverdi's operatic output, and they each seem to mimic the drama and intonation of the human voice. But the young ensemble's creative programming doesn't stop in the selection of compositions. This disc seamlessly melds Tarquino Merula's multilayered Ciaccona to a harpsichord improvisation (there are also wonderful improvisations for solo lute and violin scattered about the disc). From the jazzy opening of Uccellini's weird Aria sopra "la Bergamasca" for flute, cello, harp, and citerone to the slow-paced melancholy of Giovanni Battista Riccio's Sonata a 4, there's a treasure trove of great Baroque music here. These left-field works sound completely fresh and vibrant, a testament both to the composers and the sprightly playing of Il Giardino Armonico. Highly recommended. --Jason VerlindeGeneral CDs
