Music Review: Another Great Album from Dar Williams

While Dar did feature an entirely new band and production team on this album, I think reviewers who accuse her of selling out in order to make more money are misguided. In fact, if you examine the rankings of all Dar's albums on Amazon, you'll find that "The Green World" is currently her lowest ranked album at 70,413. Her highest-ranked albums are "Promised Land" at 1,230, "Mortal City" at 5,627, and "The Honesty Room" at 7,273. (I believe Amazon's rankings weigh current sales more heavily than historical sales which would account for "Promised Land" ranking so high, given that it is her most recent album.) These figures make it highly doubtful that Dar is making more money from this album than from her earlier recordings which remain more popular. And I suspect that many reviewers accusing her of selling out make more money than she does in their own careers. So, it would be best to judge the album on its own artistic merits.
One of the surprising things about Dar's music is how consistently good it has been across all her albums. I'm currently listening to all her albums while reviewing them on Amazon. I clearly remembered songs from "The Honesty Room" and other older albums before listening to them, but did not have such clear memories of the songs on "The Green World". But I believe that is because I've owned the older albums longer and have listened to them more often. As soon as I heard the songs on this CD again today, I remembered them quite well and that I had liked them very much when I first bought the album.
This CD certainly has some incredibly beautiful songs that really touch me, as much as any that Dar has written. They include "After All", "Spring Street", "We Learned the Sea", "Calling the Moon", "I Had No Right", and especially "It Happens Every Day" (which feels like it could have come from her first album). The other songs are more energetic but are all good songs with good lyrics.
If you're a folk purist and are willing to really listen to this album, I think you'll enjoy it very much, especially if you've liked earlier albums from Dar.
