Music Review: Find Out Exactly What You Do Believe

Not many musicians have career peaks that last more than fifteen years. Glenn Danzig may be the only musician to consistently put out great albums for such a long period of time. From the very first Misfits album through Samhain to Danzig 4, Danzig has buried the competition. After "Lucifuge", Glenn Danzig finally began to slow down. Glenn Danzig made the cross over with a fifty/fifty hardcore metal blend in the mid-eighties with his band Samhain. His next project, Danzig, was 98% metal.
Danzig's debt album was very good with plenty of catchy guitar hooks, but it still seemed undeveloped. On "Lucifuge", he hit full stride.
People say Danzig's voice is a cross between Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison. His voice is way too unique to be classified and any comparison to past vocalists doesn't do justice.
There has never been a more sinister sounding recording. Even Black Sabbath could not be darker. It's not just the Satanic theme in the lyrics. The music is like razor sharp teeth. The Blues influence meets sludgy thrash type riffs. In parts it crawls, then howls, then flies off. Whether it's the type of distortion on the guitars or the slow, heavy bass lines, every single piece of sound makes this album seem as dark as possible. This is the audio equivalent of "The Exorcist" and "Rosemary's Baby".
"Long Way Back From Hell" begins with ringing and screaming guitars that feel like a descent into hell, the vocals serve as a warning, and Danzig's voice is absolutely flawless. "Snakes Of Christ"guitars saw through the soul. "Killer Wolf" showcases Danzig's vocals perfectly. "Tired Of Being Alive" ups the tempo and rises up during the chorus to unbelievable heights. "I'm The One" is like a folk-blues classic straight from the swamps of Louisiana. "Her Black Wings" may be the best vocal performance of Danzig's whole career with extremely heavy music backing it up. "Devil's Plaything" is where the album really gets interesting. The song starts of with a really delicate sounding guitar, then gets crushed by wicked music that kicks in like a raging fire. "777" guitars are scorching; rising from single slow riffs into a complete musical assault. "Blood And Tears" is like some fifties heartbreak song with the Satanic church organ player providing part of the background music. "Girl" has menacing vibes to it which makes the romantic theme seem a bit twisted. "Pain In The World" is the definition of a gloomy song that crawls and bites like a snake.
"Lucifuge" is a very beautiful album. Christians will more than likely be afraid of this album. People who're agnostic, but not really sure about dark powers, this album will make them decide how they feel. It takes a certain type of bravery to listen to the album. It takes a little bit of insanity to let it carry you away like it will.
