Music Review: Smoky and fatally fine

There are a lot of good female vocalists, but only a few truly great ones. These are women who I put in a league all their own: Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Genya Ravan, Tracy Chapman, Joan Armatrading and now Dana Fuchs. Her live vocals on this album are so evocative that I can almost taste the Stoli and smell the cigarette smoke drifting up from the tables.
Particularly fine specimens are Baby Loves the Life, Misery and Strung Out. Each one perfectly conveys the dissonance of a life that's been too long lived in the nightclubs, yet too drawn to the dark side to give it up for suburbia. It is that fatal fondness for the edge that makes Dana Fuchs so appealing to those of us who share that attraction. Those of a certain type -- and you know who you are -- will find themselves playing these songs over and over again, on into the night.
