Music Review: An absolute treat

Dallapiccola is special. No other composer has so effectively combined a completely modern outlook with approachable lyricism. While familiar with much of his wonderful vocal music, I hadn't been exposed to much of his music for orchestra (a comparatively small body of work). This CD, from the middle portion of his life, is a good place to start. "Tartiniana", which begins the CD is a refreshing surprise--similar in approach to Stravinsky's Pulcinella--being a sunlit reworking of older materials. The violin performance by James Ehnes has plenty of sparkle.
The remainder of the album is meatier. Dallapiccola's orchestration brings both late Ravel and early Stravinsky to mind, although his orchestra is more classical and less percussive. There are many places, as in the penultimate movement of "Frammenti Sinfonici dal Balleto 'Marsia'" where the orchestration is magical. I have rarely heard passages of such quiet longing.
Each piece on the album brings something unique to the table, with "Due Pezzi" as my current favorite. Dallapiccola is neither an 18th-century composer trying to be modern, nor a 21st-century composer trying to be approachable. This is music of expression and feeling, confidently and surely composed, which just happens to use a blend of techniques which include serialism. I don't think many listeners would have difficulty in warming up to this music. It's not much of a stretch to call Dallapiccola the greatest of Italian composers. There are others who are better-known and greatly beloved. But none write music of such dimension.
A word about the recording and the performances. They're sumptious. The BBC Philharmonic is at the top of its game here. The recording is warm without being hazy, clear without being clinical. Chandos has reason to be proud of this release.
