Music reviews of GrandmastersMusic Review: A instant Classic... Best Underground Rap Album of '05 Rating: 5 Stars
Ok first I will give you track breakdown, and then go in a little more depth...
1. A nice little intro, useless, but it cool, cause there is small voice samples coming out of both ears saying The Genius, and DJ Mugg's back to back, and there is a nice alternative modern pink floyed esqe beat behing it. Although cool, it is just an intro.
7/10
2. Has nice sampling, a good beat like none other. It sounds like more of a mainstream hip hop song, which is nice. Both Verses are nice.
9/10
3. Has a cool intro to the song. Has by far one of the most unique samples ive ever hered before used in the beat. The first verse is very strong. The beat is top notch. The Hook is excellent, and I enjoy the whole song. By far the best part of this song comes about 2:40 into it, where muggs seemesly drop's the beat, an transitions into another one that is more dramatice while GZA continues to spit, and he is in fact saying some of the best lines in the song.
9/10
4. Once again Muggs uses a similar sample throughout most of the song, that is so incredbily weird, but good. The Beat is increbible crisp, and excellent. Every producer should strive to be more like Muggs. As always GZA spits great lines, also this song has no Chorus, just one long verse by GZA. It is also nice how Muggs Putts in well placed samples of telephone ring's, and someone typing on a type writer. This gives the illusion that you are in a investigaters office.
9/10
5. This song has possibly the best beat in the whole album, an the transitions Muggs uses is just incredible. Also GZA's flow is a step above the rest on this song. The hook is excellent, and very much like a Premo beat in that it is a sample of two guy's playing chess, & dice shaking with a totally different beat (Minus all the scratching. Once again GZA spit's 2 incredible long verse, but his flow on this one is incredible.
10/10
6. The Sampling on this track is incredible. This song is great cause of the guest's it is more like a WU TANG song then a GZA song, where there is many short good verses combined to make one great song. Whoever the dude is who has the first verse is great. I think it is sen Dog, but I have not hered much of RZA's work so it might be him. The Variety in this song is excellent, and the hook is only 5 sec's or so long, and is purely excellent sampling on Mugg's part. As usual the Beat is superb.
10/10
7. This is a well placed song. It is nice an calm, everything about it, The beat, the pace, GZA's flow, and the samples are more of sooth your soul style rap. GZA uses nice lines, and talks about serious stuff while naming out football team's, which is cool. Tell's a interesting story that is fun to listen to. Overall one of the better song's, and the way he names every football tern in the book, while names every team in the league, while still keeping on his subject matter is incredible. what now seems very normal for this album, the only preasence of a hook is a 10 second or so pause where the beat and a famililar sample playing.
9/10
8. TIGHT SONG RIGHT HERE!!! The beginning start's out with 'Ol Dirty Bastard (R.I.P) Talking, and is awesome. Most of the song is GZA talking about his fallen friend. The beginning of the song features a production technique I have never hered before... It start's out with RZA Saying...
" From the heart of Medina, to the head, to the east To the plaza houses, AKA the Mountain, To The Rugged Land's of Shaolin"
Now after each little phrase there is a echo. For Instance " From The Heart Of Medina " Then it echo's, but when he say's " To The Rugged Land's Of Shaolin " You here the echo before he talks which is cool.
The first verse is great, and during the excellent hook you think the 2nd one will be a dud, but it isnt. THE 2ND VERSE DESTROYS THE FIRST! The end of the song you hear ODB saying all in together, and Muggs is scratching it, and it shows he is as proficient on the cut as he is when making the beat which is immpressive.
10/10
9. Keep it short... First Hook of the album where GZA raps on it... The two guest appearences are excellent. The beat is beutifull, and crafted well. The Lines spit are great, the flow is great. This is just a great song.
10/10
10. Muggs returns here to the unique crazy Samples during the hook. Everything GZA says on here is gold. Forget what I said. THIS SONG HAS THE BEST BEAT ON THIS ALBUM. The hook is excellent, with GZA Sptting while there is that crazy sample and huge bells going off. Then to end the song there is a military plane dogfight. The Beginning of the song is incredibly dramatic with the guy talking when the beat comes in.
10/10
11. This is a dark song. Sounds more like song from Liquid Swords song, then a song from this album. It is a excellent song. And currently my fav. on the album. Nuff Said.
10/10
12. This song has the most play's on my itunes then any other song on this album, and is in 4th place overall on song;s most played out of nearly 2,000 song's. When you hear it you will know why.
10/10
Ok there, im done with that, now to the rest...
I myself think this album is better than Liquid Swords. No knocking RZA, but the production here is not only more unique, but is some of the best, and is 10 times better than Liquid Swords. Also there is not one song on this LP that I skip, The same connot be said for Liquid Swords. Also GZA's ability's have improved.
This & Chamillioniares Sound Of Revenge were my Fav. albums of 2005.
The only weak point of this CD is it is only 42 mins long, but EVERY minute of it is bangin' and that cannot be said for most other albums.
