Music reviews of D12 World

Music Review: D12 rules the world...but not for long
Rating: 2 Stars

Eminem, Swifty, Proof, Kuniva, Kon Artis, and BIZARRE(my man!) of the Dirty Dozen are back, and this time, they're takin' over the world! But just how well is their "worldwide domination" going to be? I mean, is their new album really that good, so good that it would consume listeners like me to support their reigning cause? Speaking as a fan to their music, it isn't. And the result of this album is much more disappointing than I had anticipated.

D12 decided to take a much more "serious" approach with "D12 World", avoiding the goofy and in-your-face antics that was from their last album, "Devil's Night"(which was also so damn good about them, too) That approach goes both ways, but ultimately it leads to the album's downfall. Well, the group has done a good job being more recognizable. Since their last album, people seem to remember more about Eminem than the others of the group, let alone knowing their names(can anyone even remember the names of 50 cent's G-unit posse?). Not to say that all changes with this album, but the group make a statement of that, thanks to this hot single, "My Band". The track is not only funny from the witty lyrics and background(and who can argue about the 'my salsa' part at the end of the song?), but also informative on how Eminem seems to get more cred and attention than his posse in the past; fortunately, that isn't the only good track. There's "Git Up", which is great startup with the whole album; good beats, good sound, nice flow when Eminem is rapping at the intro. On with the goods is the fast-paced "Get My Gun", and "B*tch", which has some hot beats and a catchy chorus.

Now with the bad that makes this album unforgivable. "D12 World" isn't a terrible album, but it does have one of the worst music backgrounds I've ever listened to. Mostly keyboard, guitar and bass works, it varies with all of them combined to just percussions by all tracks. They were too soft, mostly child's play, and I don't see myself breaking my neck for tracks such as "Loyalty" & "How Come." "40 ounce" tries to prove how hardcore and rough the group is. The only thing it proves is the redundancy of the chorus and its all-too-familiar song structure; it's like a typical Ludicris song, but less on the booty action and more on the binging action. "Leave Dat Boy Alone"...somebody should've leave dat cheesy track alone on the cutting room floor. Well, "I'll be damned", that track sucks as well, not to mention, SLOW and hypnotic(seriously, I felt like a brain-dead doll banging my head in-key with this track). "American Psycho II" with B-real is a much inferior track compare to the original, and I know BIZARRE can do better with "Just Like U"; what happened to the nasty guy that "drop out of school, take drugs, and molest (rhymes with 'klutz')?"

Like the previous album where it introduced Obie Tribe, "D12 World" introduced a new member of the Shady family, named Young Z, courtesy of "Commercial Break." After listening to his freestyle verse, I'm not sure if it's the music or the rapper himself, his introduction didn't impress me like Obie's. I wanted to say the same for this cat, Bugz from "Bugz 97", but after knowing more about his short life in "Good Die Young", plus the TV resource that he's the "lost" member of D12, I at least give some respect for the departed. Speaking of "Good Die Young", tribute songs are always good to remember a lost friend, but please, Dirty Dozen, spare your own member some eternal peace and don't sing...ever.

"D12 World" could've been a great album, 'cause the group's mature image seems to prove it(...well, at least Eminem stop talking about all that mother-hating and wife-killing nonsense); now if only the group mix their new imagery with their old raunchy style. Too bad I've got an album that doesn't crack me up, it was too long of a snooze fest, and surprisingly enough, their risqué lyrics were toned down compare to "Devil's Night"; this is how serious the group is? I'm not saying they are soft(no way that I'm sayin' that in front of them), the group just lost their edge, and they need to get their edge back if they're thinking of making a third album, or else their world will be in anarchy.

Description of D12 World

Japanese pressing of the rap act's 2004 album includes a limited edition bonus DVD (NTSC/Region 1) that features the same content as the already deleted U.S. release (30 mins. behind the scenes footage, 'My Band' (director's cut video) '40 Oz' (video), plus an exclusive bonus CD with two tracks, 'Slow Your Roll' & 'Barbershop'. Universal.
You can say this about D12: few rap groups do a better job of straddling the line between the humorous and offensive, silly and sadistic. So when Eminem kick starts D12's sophomore effort by spewing vulgar rhymes to the tune of the adolescent "Name Game" on "Git Up," it's not entirely unexpected. But can D12 ever be considered anything other than an Eminem science project gone awry? "My Band," a pure novelty track (and this album's "Purple Pills"), addresses this question. Rather than lament the fact that nobody cares about the rest of the Em's crew, group members Proof, Kuniva, Swift, and Bizarre celebrate their obscurity while Shady himself croons a painfully catchy off-kilter hook. In fact, most of the crew's punch lines and hooks tend to be overshadowed by Him. Plus, Eminem produces a sizable chunk of the tracks, which is not necessarily a good thing considering his rhyme skills trump his beat-making skills considerably. With the exception of Mr. Proof's banging production on "Good Die Young" and Bizarre's creepy shock rap come-ons on "U R the One," D12's world sounds too much like an Eminem side project. Beat contributions by Kanye West (title cut) and Dr. Dre ("American Psycho 2") bolster the overall product, but not to the level of an Eminem solo album. --Dalton Higgins
