Music Review: Not easily digestible, but worth trying

The Cyril Scott revival continues apace, or - in fact - almost explosively; from being virtually unrepresented on disc just a few years ago we seem currently to be getting something like his complete output, though from a variety of sources. Leslie De'Ath has recorded his complete piano works for Dutton - a commendable project, to be sure, but probably one that will mainly be of specialist interest. Scott's piano music is certainly worth hearing, but on the evidence of his piano sonatas it is even more structurally wayward, static and perfumed than his orchestral music. I suppose the disc at hand is best served in small portions; Scott's calorie-filled rum balls are not easily digestible, and listening to too much in one go is a surefire recipe for a headache.

Stylistically, Scott's music is chromatic and harmonically adventurous, but its foundations are impressionism and opulent late-romanticism. There are more than occasional traces of Debussy and Delius; some of the music sounds a little Baxian, but some is more reminiscent of Scriabin, Feinberg and even Sorabji. The textures are extremely dense (or, rather, constipated), the rhythms loose, the melodic material improvisational and the harmonies lush but opaque.

The early, unpublished sonata from 1901 is somewhat lighter, but the intense elaborations and ornamentations still make for a rather taxing listening experience. The first numbered sonata is harmonically adventurous, often dissonant, and the metre rarely stays the same for more than a single bar - while it is often gorgeously colored it is often static and equally often structurally meandering. The second sonata (1935) is more concentrated and probably the best work on the disc; its ebb and flow has an almost hypnotic quality, and the surging, ecstatic climaxes are stirring. The third sonata (1956) is less opulent but not more concentrated; thus it comes across as slightly stale, even though there are certainly fine things here (although like slightly stale chocolate and eggnog it has a certain slightly inedible and forbidding quality).

The performances seem idiomatic and confident. Although De'Ath can do little to lighten the textures, at least he manages to realize the almost tidal flow of the music pretty well; the playing is atmospheric, varied (as much as the music allows), finely phrased and technically assured. The recorded sound is good if perhaps a little dry, and the notes (by the pianist) very informative. An interesting release, and well worth hearing in small portions, though it should come with a warning sticker.
