Music Review: I would love to give this 5 stars

Liz Callaway's recording of show music has an interesting combinations of show tunes, arranged with style and daring,performed well. She pulls her music from such diverse shows as South Pacific and The Robber Bridegroom. There are little known gems as well as classics. The list of composers is a who's who of musical theatre. So why only 3 instead of 5 stars? Because the production doesn't do Liz Callaway's voice justice. The songs are over-produced, the vocals so processed, that it seems like Ms. Callaway can only sing in a breathy, reedy and somewhat colorless style. But listen to her on other recordings, or, if you get the chance, in person, and you'll discover a much more dynamic voice, with a greater range of emotion. (You can hear bits of the qualities of her 'real' voice in "Marry Me A Little" and "Meadowlark".) Is this CD worth the price? I would say yes, if only for the selection of songs. Where else could you get "Sleepy Man", an infrequently recorded but beautifully evocative country lullaby, Stop, Time, from the musical "Big", and a very clever arrangement of "Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair", plus the aforementioned "Meadowlark", from the Stephen Schwartz score of "The Baker's Wife", which is the highlight of this recording. So, it's a wonderful cross-section of show music, with a mediocre performance by a much-more-talented performer.

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David HoriuchiGeneral CDs
