Music Review: Solution to those British TV earworms.

This is a cute CD for those with that irrepressible ear worm for some old TV theme show. While it does have a few American shows on it the bulk, which makes this stand out in the field, are 1960's British adventure shows which are less well known in the US. Indeed it is on American shows that this fails.
Most CD's flogging `greatest TV themes' focus on American TV shows and to be honest, they had some good ones. Some like I Love Lucy, with a few notes brings back a flood of memories but this CD focuses on less well known, in America, British shows like Thunderbirds and the Avengers which have the same affect on the British memory. They do a very good job. These were usually shows with a small orchestra with a strong brass section and if you liked them this delivers that sound. The familiar riff opening of "Hawaii 5 O" carries all that energy and in fact their version of the Thunderbirds theme is actually a better delivery than on official soundtracks because it cuts out the extraneous sci-fi noises and focuses on the music.
The one track that failed and this sadden me because it was what I had particularly wanted, was their rendition of Mandel's "Suicide is Painless" the theme to MASH. Traditionally played in a minor key and haunting, never meant for a large brass section, played here it fails. Yes it's the tune but it is harder and lacks the melancholy associated with the music.
Perhaps it's just dating of the music. The theme from MASH is one of the last tracks and maybe it reflects the change in style and music and why the brass sound of the 60's didn't make it into the 70's. This CD is good for those 60's tunes that struck out boldly with an assertion. Tunes like Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Hawaii 5 O proudly strut from the speakers, while Mancini's Pink Panther slinks coolly across the ear. They're hopelessly dated and still great
