Music Review: Top notch rappers

When I got this album Holy Culture, immediately I could see that they certainly do deserve to be the reference point in rapping. They are top notch rappers, delivering with energy and skill.

I've been listening to rap since day one back in 1979 when "Rapper's Delight" hit the scene. I've enjoyed the many generations of rap, including the era of the mid-1980s when about the only backup for the rapping was human beatbox. Yet still for me, the musical tracks underneath the rapping usually have more influence on me as to how much I like a rap record than the rapping itself. As I've read customer reviews of various rap albums, I see that for most, however, the most important thing about a rap album is the rapping itself--the skill of the rapper, the creativity of the wordplays and stories, etc. With the emphasis there, certainly Cross Movement shines on this CD (the only one I've heard by them). As I said, normally I don't pay such close attention to the rapping skill itself, but these guys are so powerful that they command attention!

The highlight of this commanding presence is in "It's Going Down." WOW! While the beat on the musical track is great, what really gets you going is the powerful rapping! I don't recall ever hearing rapping this good!

Although I see the quality of the rapping is top notch, still, to me the underlying musical tracks are an important part of the rap record experience. In this department, Cross Movement gives me great surprises too. "Driven" has a great Middle Eastern jam going on, and the track on "When I Flow (It's Gospel)" almost sounds Middle Eastern. Since I love World Beat music from the Middle East (and in fact have some Arabic rap songs in my collection), I was jazzed to find such sounds on this rap album, and a Christian rap album at that! Other favorite tracks of mine, because of their great underlying musical tracks, are "Rise Up," "It's Goin' Down," and "Start Somethin'"--awesome jammin' beats on these! I also like the somber piano and tubular bells on "Free." (On a mix tape, I put "Free" right after Stacie Orrico's "Instead.")

When it comes to rapping, I've heard no more powerful rappers than these guys. As far as total album experience, I still like Urban D's "The Tranzlation" better--I find it to be more creative and more interesting. But I can't imagine anyone who likes rap music not liking this Cross Movement album.
