Music reviews of Full Circle (Dig)

Music Review: Creed comes back with a fire!
Rating: 5 Stars

It's too bad that Creed wasn't able to keep it together for the whole decade, and by now this would've been their 6th or 7th album instead of their 4th. But these things happen for a reason. Lead singer Scott Stapp got his ego in check, and got himself back to what appears to be a healthy state of mind. As for guitarist Mark Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips and bassist Brian Marshall, they were able to experiment as Alter Bridge and strengthen their musical talents. Now that all 4 members are back together, they seem hungry and focused. What I love most about this album is how fresh it is. Rather than getting together and making another Human Clay or Weathered, they decided to reinvent the band's sound and image. If you ever asked yourself, "What would Creed have gone on to do if they never broke up?" then this album is certainly the answer. It's definitely Creed, but it's a new Creed. It's too early to tell how this album ranks with the 3 classics they delivered to us years ago, but it's definitely a strong album with a lot of passion in it. As I said, the sound of this album differs from that of previous efforts, yet somehow this feels more like the Creed that was on My Own Prison than the one that was on Weathered.

The album opens with a bang with the first single, Overcome. The guitar is heavy and crunchy like something from the last Alter Bridge album, and if you had showed me this song back in 2003 my jaw would've hit the floor. I admit that Stapp's vocals sound a bit exaggerated during the verse, but he's absolutely on fire during the chorus, possibly the best he's ever sounded. To top things off, Tremonti gives us a killer guitar solo. Bread Of Shame has a thick Korn-esque guitar lick with occasional double-bass, and Stapp sounds angry yet right at home with the music. In some ways I can imagine this being something that Metallica would've written on one of their last couple albums. A Thousand Faces mellows things out a bit, yet it still has a driving chrous with backing vocals from Tremonti. It seems like an edgier version of 3 Doors Down. Things get rocking again with Suddenly but in a less aggressive manner. Tremonti is all over the fret-board and the band sounds tight as ever. Rain is a perfect choice for the next single because it's a mellow yet upbeat tune that's not cheesy. It's one of those songs that instantly sounds good on the first listen and doesn't even need to grow on you, and for the 5th track in a row Stapp's vocals sound like they're in top form. Away In Silence actually starts off a bit cheesy, kinda reminds me of Goodbye To Romance by Ozzy Osbourne. But by the time we get to the chorus it all comes together, and would be a great tune to raise your lighter to at a concert. Next we have Fear, which begins with another crunchy guitar riff and the verse kinda reminds me of Sister. It's nice to hear Creed sound like they're in good spirits while rocking out at the same time. On My Sleeve is a dark, slower song. I'm not sure how else to describe it...perhaps a more depressing version of One Last Breath? The title track, Full Circle, is definitely different. It has a southern groove to it, and in some ways I think it might've made a good closing song. The next song is Time, and while it isn't one of the more memorable moments on the album, it's pretty good and would make for another good raise-your-lighter tune. Good Fight is a mid-tempo tune that rocks during the chorus, and while it isn't very different it still manages to be very catchy and it puts me in a good mood. The album closes with The Song You Sing. It's another mid-tempo tune with a touching chorus. My only complaint is that this sounds more like a song to be in the middle of the album rather than at the end.

If anyone out there is thinking that Creed just threw this album together to sell a bunch of records, I think you'll feel differently when you listen to it a few times. The band sounds very tight and the songs have a passion in them that can't be faked. I always knew Creed had it in them to be a band that would last many years and continue to put out solid material, so I'm glad they're proving me right. Welcome back guys!
