Music reviews of Gift of Game

Music Review: Pretty Good....
Rating: 3 Stars

Ok, first let's get the bad stuff out of the way: everything you've heard about this band is true. They are a rap/metal band, one of their rapper/singers has a rather high-pitched voice, they are immature and oversexed, and they are a second-rate Limp Bizkit.

Now that that's out of the way, let's get to the point: they are actually (gulp) good. They are not my favorite band by any means, but they are worth a listen. For serious fans of this group, Crazy Town also have a cool song with Paul Oakenfold called, "Starry-Eyed Surprise". Just thought I'd mention that. Now, onto the tracks:

1. Intro - Stupid intro with some dude saying, "Crazy Town isn't evil, we just cause trouble and have fun. We're not evil, we're not good. We're in between." Psssh. Whatever, man. 2/10

2. Toxic - Standard rap rock track about rocking shows and kicking ass in the moshpit. Lots of cuss words, weird, sludgy beat to it. It's okay, but the rapper who sings the chorus has an irritating voice and lyrics are sub-par. 4/10

3. Think Fast - Song about living life in the fast lane. Pretty much the same, but the delivery is much better than on "Toxic". It has some cool DJ scratching and much better lyrics than the last song. Some unknown rapper guests on this one, his lines are great. 7/10

4. Darkside - Whoa, AWESOME! This album would be a perfect 10 if every song was like this! Catchy chorus, good rap lyrics, one of the 5 best tracks on the album. 10/10

5. Black Cloud - Another INCREDIBLE song with great lyrics. Speaks of depression and drug addiction with really great lyrics like, "Here comes the rain/I project my pain/trying to make sense of these crazy things/I'm a diamond in the rough/could I suffer enough?" and "a thousand cigarettes won't change the way we feel." Another one of the best 5 tracks. 10/10

6. Butterfly - If you've heard of Crazy Town, you've probably heard this song. This is their only real hit. It a kind of ballad with a funky beat sampled from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Funny lyrics about the perfect girl, the perfect love. It's cool, but there's a hard-rock remix of this song that I think is better than the original. One of the 5 best tracks. 9/10

7. Only When I'm Drunk - An immature, cheesy fun song about being drunk and doing things you wouldn't normally do. It's funny, not one of their best. 5/10

8. Hollywood Babylon - Standard rap rock track. Funny, trashy, everything you would expect. 7/10

9. Face the Music - A fight song with more bragging. Hilarious part where they keep yelling, "Stick em! Stick em! HAHAHA! Stick em!" Fred Durst mocked these lyrics on the new LB album Results May Vary. Great guitar riff, and the boys from CXT somehow get the balls to say the N word on this one. 7/10

10. Lollipop Porn - (...) It's funny (...) lyrics (...) This is probably where the inspiration for the cover came from. Some really cool lyrics about dancing with the devil, great track, nearly made it to the top five tracks. 9/10

11. Revolving Door - Alright, this is where their trashiness and machismo starts to get annoying. It's Lollipop Porn taken too far. This song is about one of the rapper needing a revolving door on his house because there are so many ladies coming in and out. He also brags about everything, from the size of his house to the size of his...well, you get the idea. Bad song. 3/10

12. Players (Only love You When They're Playing)- This is the pure hip-hop track, and it RULES! If this track had got some airplay, it could easily have been their first single instead of Butterfly! The chorus has some great R&B female vocals. One of the best 5 tracks. 10/10

13. B-Boy 2000 - Another hip-hop track with KRS-ONE guesting. The rapping is great on this one! Great hip-hop beat with spiraling guitar riff! Catchy-ass chorus that says, "I'm a bad-ass b-boy 2 triple-O/a space-age hip-hop superhero!" One of the 5 best tracks. 10/10

14. www.Crazytown.com - Blah, blah, blah. Man, sometimes rappers come up with the stupidest (...) for their intros and outros. 2/10

Anyway, this band is not bad, they are very catchy and they do have talent, but if you want teenage-minded, kick-ass rap/metal, Limp Bizkit is the better choice over Crazy Town. If you want thought provoking metal, choose Tool. If you want rap, get Outkast. If you want the best rap/metal ever, get Rage Against the Machine. But if you want something catchy that has rap in it but also rocks, get some Crazy Town or Limp Bizkit.

Bottom line: for what this band is, they are great. 6.5/10

Description of Gift of Game

Japanese version featuring a bonus track.
From Run-D.M.C.'s unlikely courtship of Aerosmith to Anthrax's union with Public Enemy, seemingly polar opposites have spawned a whole musical genre popularized by the likes of Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Kid Rock. Crazy Town's The Gift of the Game neatly slots into the rap-rock category. They obviously carry some clout, amassing an impressive guest roster for a debut album, including godfathers of the scene Red Hot Chili Peppers on stand-out track "Butterfly" and KRS-One on the storming "B-Boy 2000." As debut albums go, this is about as accomplished and cocksure as you get. --Helen Marquis
