Music reviews of Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa

Music Review: An epic Cradle of Filth concept album... and heavy as ever! Extreme metal at it's finest!
Rating: 5 Stars

"Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa" is awesome in so many ways! I've been a Cradle fan for a long time now, and I would say that "Venus Aversa" is one of their best albums since "Midian". Forget the albums "Nymphetamine" and "Thornography" if you didn't like them, (like many reviews that I've read have stated), because this album continues in the same awesome vein as "Godspeed On the Devil's Thunder", only it's even better. What stood out the most to me on this album is that it is Cradle's heaviest and fastest effort in a long time. The band has always been heavy and fast, but this album is completely blistering from beginning to end, with an unbelievable assault of percussion from Martin ?karoupka, extremely punishing and versatile vocals from Dani Filth, and plenty of heavy riffing and solos from Paul Allender and James McIlroy on guitars. That's not to say that there is no melody whatsoever on this record, because there are some very creepy and melodic moments (such as "The Persecution Song", "Lilith Immaculate" and "Forgive Me Father {I Have Sinned}" ), but "Venus Aversa" is predominantly a brutal black metal record. Of course there are some of Cradle's traditional and haunting female vocals, performed by Lucy Atkins this go-round, with Ashley Ellyllon on backing vocals. Ellyllon also plays the chilling keyboards on the album. Notably, this album is the first Cradle album that doesn't have any instrumentals. Many of the songs are 6-7 minutes long. Every song is a relentless metal epic (with perhaps the exception of "Forgive Me Father {I Have Sinned}", which is different from the rest of the album; the track is a bit lighter musically, sounding like something that you might have heard on "Damnation and a Day", sort of like the song "Mannequin". But even that song grows infectiously on you, and I have grown to love it).
The album's lyrical concept is equally as brilliant as the music. "Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa" is a concept album much like "Godspeed On the Devil's Thunder", which told the story of Guilles de Rais (a serial killer in the 1400s), or "Cruelty and the Beast", which told the story of the legend of Hungarian "blood countess" Elizabeth Bathory. The difference in those two concept albums and "Venus Aversa" is that "Venus Aversa" tells an original story. The album spins a tale of a demon, Lilith, the first wife of the Biblical Adam. Dani Filth (who writes all of the lyrics) summed up the album's concept: - - "It's about the resurgence of Lilith into modern society as a deity. There's a bit of Victoriana in there. Essentially, at heart, it's a nice gothic horror story." - - And this concept works beautifully on the album. Since the protagonist of the story is a female, this album serves as a feminine counterpart of sorts to the previous C.O.F. Album "Godspeed On the Devil's Thunder" which had a very masculine concept.
The sinister lyrical content and the punishing, wicked music on this album demands and rewards multiple listens. It's the kind of classic Cradle album that you can hear as many times as you would like and it never fails to satisfy. The music is so vivid, it seems as though it comes to life when you listen to it.
It's hard to pick my favorite songs from this album, because it is a classic in my eyes. But, here are some of my absolute favorite highlights:

"The Cult Of Venus Aversa"
"One Foul Step From the Abyss"
"The Nun With the Astral Habit" ******* (My overall favorite, and perhaps the heaviest track on the record) *******
"Retreat of the Sacred Heart"
"The Spawn Of Love and War"
"Harlot on a Pedestal" ******** (Another brutally fast and heavy track, very cool) ********
"Beyond Eleventh Hour"

Well, I guess I listed half of the album as my favorites, but that's how great "Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa" really is. I couldn't be more pleased. However, because the album has so much content to digest, this might not be the best album to start with if you are new to Cradle Of Filth. If you are new to Cradle, try "Cruelty and the Beast", "Dusk and Her Embrace" or "Midian" first. For Cradle fans, BUY THIS ALBUM NOW! You won't be disappointed. And be sure to see Cradle Of Filth in concert when they come around, because they are really nice guys and show lots of appreciation for their fans. If you like extreme black metal, you can't go wrong with this album. 5 stars.

Description of Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa

Grammy-nominated Cradle of Filth have been pioneers of extreme music since their debut in 1994. Never shy to embrace the epic, they have constantly sought to push the boundaries of their art. Unafraid of ruffling a few feathers, the band have continually refused to bow to convention or to conform to prevalent trends and fads. Yet despite this uncompromising stance, the band are still the most successful British heavy metal band since Iron Maiden, with legions of fans around the globe!

Cradle of Filth continue to shock, excite, disgust and inspire in equal measures. Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa, the latest chapter of the band's dark history, is their ninth studio album and one of their fastest and most brutal yet. As an acquaintance of the band so aptly noted, this is like "Iron Maiden on crack in a graveyard of angels!".
