Music Review: my favorite CJ CD

I was rooting through Best Buy's meager selection of Cowboy Junkies CD's one day and found this, by itself (not as a bonus disc.) I saw that it was all cover versions and thought "But I want to hear some original CJ material." Then I saw that the price tag sticker said $0.01, and I took it to a clerk and said, "Does this say ONE CENT!?" He sort of reluctantly admitted that it did. "Heck," I thought, "the CJ's have always relied heavily on covers, and even though I only recognize two of the songs on here, I like 'em both, so what the heck, I'll spring for the penny fee." So I gave the check-out girl a penny from the "need-a-penny, take-a-penny" dish since I never carry effing pennies, and left the store laughing that the government hadn't been able to collect any sales tax on the price.
The songs are really good - I like "Thunder Road" better than Bruce's version - but the diehard CJ fan must be forewarned that they use a lot of electronic, sometimes heavily-distorted instrumentation on a couple of the songs, though they do it really well and in a manner appropriate to the effect of the song. "Darkness Darkness" is superb, almost creepy in a way, "Lungs" is pretty good, and "Helpless" is very good though it misses a certain melancholic north-country feel that Neil's had - MT lets her voice get a little too sweet in the first verse. The song by The Cure I usually cut short after the first of the seemingly endless repetitions of the phrase "seventeen seconds."
I'm sure glad that they had a "Need-a-penny, take-a-penny" dish by that cash register. Best bang-for-my-buck I ever got.
