Music Review: Not as bad as some think and not as great as others do

Well. This only album that evolved from a short collaboration of Zeppelin axeman Jimmy Page and former Deep Purple and Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale seems to be either dismissed as total crap or hailed as a forgotten masterpiece. Let us take the middle path and see what comes out.
1. Shake my tree - a great opener. Starts off slower with a Zeppelinish guitar motive and then evolves into a heavz rocker. There are no guitar solos, but Jimmy delivers more great riffs than he did in the past eighteen years. Coverdale's vocals sound too over the top inthe higher passages. 4 stars
2. Waiting on you - the song has an even better riff to kick it off and the vocals are a littlebit more restrained, although thez sound tired. And the refrein melody is pretty derivative. The last minute of the song is just too repetitive and David goes out of gas. 3,5 stars.
3.Take me for a little while - maybe Coverdale's best performance on the album - no yelling the high notes. The song starts with nice acoustic picking before it evolves into an anthemic chorus with the use of strings. The tune is also one of the catchiest here. Jimmy does play a short solo the overal stzle and sond of which reminds of his Zep days. So it is a ballad... So what? If all power ballads sounded like this I would be pleased. 5 stars
4. Pride and joy - a cross between a lightweight acostic rocker and heavy electric riffage. The problem is that the melodz is weak - this may be the most derivative rif on the whole record. And David does not help it -desperately trying to sound like Robert Plant and failing . At times he even sounds like a caricature on Axl Rose... 1 star
Over now - Another heavy riff again. Not that clever, but sounds good. David tries Plant again... This time it doesn't sound like a total disaster, although the song lacks in the songwriting category. The drums seem like played by a robot. While they did not disturb me earlier - here they sound distracting. Also, the song is too long and thus derivative. 2 stars
6. Feelin' Hot - Fast and heavy, lots of energy, but oh, so cliched... That goes for Jimmy's soloing on here. technically good but uninspired. 2 tars
7. Easy does it - starting acoustically again, revitalizing the sound of Zeppelin's third and fourth album. David trying to sound like Robert again at times. After some two minutes the song goes electric and heavy again - recycling the same pattern for the third time. The yelling is here again as well. Yet, at lest some passages have a charm of their own 3 stars
8. Take a look at yourself - now this is a power ballad with all its prettentiousness. Sonds like a leftover from the late eighties Whitesnake. Funny, but Coverdale sonds better than on most of the other songs... Jimmy Page pulls outprobalz the slowest, shortest and sweetest solo he ever did. And that is not a compliment 1.5 stars
9. Don't leave me this way - interesting from the start with Jimmy's subtle guitar lines. A slow bluesy piece. David at his best - finally not that much Plant in his performance. Jimmy throws in some fine licks in between the singing in the verses. The song has a dramatic, epic feel to it. Jimmy plays a fine bluesy solo - his longest on here so far - and most inventive as weell. Scorching and fast in some of its part as well. The best song on here. Almost no other to compete with it. Exciting to its ending. 5 stars
10. Absolution blues - starts off pretty creepy, continuing with a wall of flashy guitar soloing. Then follows the fastest riff Jimmy ver did. Really awesome. David sounds like Robert a lot again, bvut this time it is mostly well done. One passage is even ripped off of a Zep song (I don't remember which right now). The guitar solo is just fabulous. 5 stars
11. Whisper a prayer for the dying - starts off acoustically with similar kind of strumming like Take me for a little while, although it is much bleaker. The darkest song on the record in fact, Again Page does electric riffage (this time fairly generic sounding). Coverdale's yells are too much here, really. Some of the slower passages do sound interesting. 3 stars
Overall 3 stars
Get it as the best four songs are realy worth it. But do not overpay. Buy it used.
