Music Review: Cornel West & BMWMB - Never Forget:: A Journey of Revelations
Rating: 3 Stars

American scholar and public intellectual Cornell West provides "Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations" (2007) a release which featuring guest appearances from Talib Kweli, Black Thought, Rah Digga, Iriz, Lucky Witherspoon, Ambassador, Paul Woodruff, Prince, Tavis Smiley, Michael Eric Dyson, Rhymefest, Neo Abassy, Malik Yusef, KRS-1, M-1, Killer Mike, Doey, Roc, Lucky Witherspoon, Andre3000, Dave Hollister, Chuckii Booker, Lenny Williams, Daryl Moore & Gerald Levert. Princeton Professer Cornell West's commentary is found throughout this release. Talib Kweli opens the album on "Bushanomics" rhyming and using a chorus similiar to the one found in Grand Master Flash's classic "Message", while Cornel West talks about Hip Hop. Black Thought, Rah Digga, Iriz, Lucky Witherspoon collaborate for "America" talking about the struggles Black's face. "Still Here" is laced with some smooth production, Ambassador who I have never heard of before provides some on point rhymes for the cut. A high profile guest appearance comes from Prince who sings about the problems of the world on "Dear Mr. Man". On "911" Cornel West talks about the significance of the day and how it changed history. Tavis Smiley & Michael Eric Dyson discuss the "N Word" backed by some jazzy production. Rhymefest, Neo Abassy & Malik Yusef rep their city on "Welcome to the Chi", while Cornel West addresses the president on "Mr. President" feat. KRS-One & M-1 of Dead Prez. Another big collaboration follows "Keepin It P.I." feat. Killer Mike, Doey, Roc & Lucky Witherspoon, without saying any names West references Lawrence Summers former president of Harvard University, a man West had a falling out with. Andre 3000's funkafied "Chronometrophobia" follows, this track originally appeared on the Idlewild soundtrack. Singer's David Hollister & Chuckii Booker provide an upbeat feel good joint with "Gonna Be Alright". Another creative cut is "Matter Of", Cornel West talks about love and his family while oldschool singer Lenny Williams provides some soulful vocals. Daryl Moore's "Soul Sista" vibes well, positive music. The late Gerald Levert (R.I.P.) shines on "The Man's Gonna Getcha" feat. Waynee Wayne who rhymes about racial profiling and physical abuse. Cornel West provides a solid release with "Never Forget: A Journey" full of conscious and substantial music. 3.5.

Description of Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations

Dr. Cornel West, one of America's most prominent black intellectuals, has teamed up with Hidden Beach Recordings to produce one of the most important and socially-conscious music projects to be released in 2007. On the heels of the Don Imus controversy, topical debates on the political and sociological effects regarding the use of the N Word and our country searching for answers to the question "Now What?" all are addressed in the context of this CD. This compelling body of work features Cornel West as a conductor who orchestrates a symphony of hip-hop and r&b recording artists and producers in the delivery of a resounding message that offers music as a positive force to effect change, awareness and solidarity.

Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations is a riveting, thought-compelling approach to raise the consciousness of the mainstream music consumer through a positive lyrical approach. It exemplifies a level of love, unity, solidarity, and loyalty designed to the give the world a force of good in the form of music, especially Black music, in these bleak times.

Celebrating Walt Whitman in 1993, theoretician and activist Cornel West wrote of the former's "faith in democracy... not simply as a form of governance... but rather a dynamic means for the cultivation and encouragement of the potentialities and possibilities of individuals." The same can be said of West's own approach to hip-hop culture, as demonstrated on this follow-up to 2001's Sketches of My Culture. Threaded through its soul-funk, R&B, and hip-hop songs are a few trying spoken-word pieces, but these are levied with sufficient restraint so that the more musical numbers predominate. Throughout, West counters the drawbacks of his own lyrical delivery with the talents of his wide-ranging guests, including Prince ("Dear Mr. Man"), André 3000 of Outkast ("Chronomentrophobia"), KRS-One ("Mr. President"), Black Thought of the Roots ("America"), Talib Kweli ("Bushonomics"), Jill Scott ("What Time It Is"), and others. Clearly, West and his bevy of collaborators don't shy away from easy targets, but while West's books offer deeper and more compelling expressions of his radical thought and theory, his musical offerings provide welcoming inroads to his belief in hip-hop culture as a relevant, life-affirming field of play for resistance and hope in equal measure. --Jason Kirk
