Music Review: Unbelievable

There are two types of Copeland fans, and they can easily be characterized by the first two albums released by the band; there are those that love Beneath Medicine Tree, and those that love In Motion. These two albums are remarkably different and as such attracted two completely different audiences. In Marsh's own words, "With Beneath Medicine Tree, I wanted to make a record that moves people, while with In Motion, I wanted to make a record that makes people move."
When Eat, Sleep, Repeat was released, it was clear that Copeland was moving back towards the sound created in BMT, which cause the "IM fans" to feel somewhat alienated. Many of them were outraged at the direction taken, swearing off Copeland forever.
But now that the Copeland Anthology is complete, it is ever apparent that In Motion was the odd man out; it was a detour in their musical progression. I submit the theory that if In Motion had never been made, no listener would be able to detect any miss-step in Copeland's sound. The most major difference is that Eat, Sleep, Repeat has a much darker sound. But this adds to the beauty all the more. ESR is an absolutely haunting album that draws the listener into it's sullen elegance. The album begins with the harsh melody of a vibraphone as Marsh laments, "Where's My Head?" It then moves into the reversed tones of Eat, Sleep, Repeat, the albums title track that gives a very personal study of love itself. "Control Freak", the single from the album, is an earnest rock ballad that questions the implications of breaking another's heart. The next track, "Careful Now", begins as a more upbeat song, but ends on an haunting, unanswered note which leads right into "Love Affair", perhaps Copeland's greatest masterpiece to date. It begins as a soft, heartbroken piano ballad which builds into a guitar-driven bridge, capping in a gorgeous Jazz section.
The album can then be broken into a second half after this point, starting with the pulsing electronic sounds of "I'm Safer On An Airplane". It is followed by another upbeat song, "By My Side", and then the songs that I call the "fraternal twins," "Cover What You Can" and "The Last Time He Saw Dorie"; the former being shorter and more coarse, while the latter is softer, longer, and much more beautiful. Following this is "I'm A Sucker For A Kind Word", whose harsh tones are contrasted by the epic finale, "When You Thought You'd Never Stand Out", which plays out as almost a duet between Marsh and the album's guest vocalist, Anna Becker.
Overall, it is a perfect album which, to this day (over 4 years since its release), remains my personal favorite of all time. If you loved BMT, then do not be fooled by the negative reviews. This is the album you have been waiting for.
