Music Review: Oistrakh: An Original Master

Classical music reissue programs sure ain't what they used to be, and even one of the standout series of the last decade, Universal's "Original Masters," has gone from extravagant 8 CD sets down to a bunch of two-fers. At least this recent reissue featuring violinist David Oistrakh tosses in a third CD for the price two. "Concertos (not "Cons" as Amazon suggests) and Encores" has many bright moments but it is not without problems. First the cons, most of the selections are in mono from the late 1940s and early 1950s with Soviet symphonies and conductors. In fairness the sound is excellent, and some Concertos, like the Mendelssohn, sparkle here compared to earlier CD accounts. Which brings us to another problem, while many of these performances originally appeared on vinyl for the Westminster label (now part of the DG/Universal family), they have been farmed out to a variety of CD labels over the years, and at minimum the Mendelssohn (Classica D'oro), Glazunov and Kabalevsky VCs (both Vanguard) have appeared on disc previously. Finally, this digi-pak packaging format leaves much to be desired. But there are some delightful moments captured here, none more significant than David conducting the Royal Philharmonic and son Igor in the first Bruch Concerto, an absolute treasure recorded for DG in 1961. If you can manage to get this set from an Amazon Marketplace vendor as cheaply as I did, then this is certainly a five-star value. However, with it now being listed as out-of-print on Amazon proper, don't delay if you're interested.
