Music Review: The Mystical Sound Of Jazz Sitar And Electric Guitar

There's Something magical about the sound of Sitar and electric guitar. We have two master musicians interweaving their sounds on this CD.
I've been buying all of the ECM Touchstone series. The Touchstone CD series are re-released free jazz jazz fusion post-bop music masterpieces from the 1970s. I love every single one of them but this particular CD is one of my favorites. The musicians here are all legends, Collin Walcott, John Abercrombie, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette! Collin Walcott (Sitar and Tabla) is the leader of this group and does some his finest work ever on this CD. Collin Walcott is well known for his Sitar and Tabla work with Oregon and is my favorite musician in that group as well.
All the tracks shine on this CD. But some of the highlights for me are: 'Margueritte' shows off Collin Walcott's as a Sitar virtuoso with Abercrombie's sureal electric guitar, just a beautiful cut with the whole group weaving in and out of Collin's Sitar; and 'Prancing', featuring a crossfire duet with Collin on Tabla and Dave on bass. Then there's 'Cloud Dance' where the whole group interplays intuitively while painting a water color backdrop with electric guitar, Sitar, bass and drums.
Some people confuse this music with "New Age" but nothing could be further from the truth. All of the challenging music in the ECM Touchstone series are cutting edge and unparalleled to this day. Buy them now. Once these are out of print again they may be impossible to find.
