Music Review: I'm Bearing Witness... to the greatness of Collective Soul
Rating: 5 Stars

As with most CS albums, it took several listens to Afterwords before I could really start to appreciate each song individually and the CD as a whole. My conclusion is: this is the freshest and most creative Collective Soul has sounded since "Dosage". Other than the first track, New Vibration, that is. Not a bad song, but not really good, either. It WAS a good song, back in 1996. It was called Precious Declaration. Then again in 1999 as "Next Homecoming." Obviously the song's "groove" has been recycled a few times. It's the very definition of "filler", not to mention it's about as cliche as a rock song can get (handclaps? Done to death, guys). Should've been on the "Youth" CD. But other than this one sub-par track, Afterwords is a rocking, yet emotion-stirring, musical roller-coaster ride.

Afterwords actually broke the trend of each successive CS record being my "least favorite" since the self-titled Blue Album. That doesn't mean I've disliked any of their CDs: they are all great in their own respect. But after two down-turns, those being "Blender" and "Youth", I can tell this is Ed & the band at their creative best. I can't think of one single thing (beyond New Vibration) to criticize here; except that I would have shuffled the tracks just a bit, and had "All That I Know" follow right after "Never Here Alone." Try this out for yourself on iTunes. That split second after Ed gives a "three, four" count at the end of NHA, the drumbeat of ATIK kicks in; and it sounds great. Much better I think than leading into the slower, moodier "Bearing Witness". But just a minor complaint. I love Joel Kosche's offering, "I Don't Need Anymore Friends". Now, could I listen to a whole CD of Joel's voice? I doubt it, but the song works really well with his vocals. Not to mention it just plain rocks, as does "Persuasion Of You". But no Collective Soul review would be complete without mentioning Ed Roland's brilliant lyrics. The guy is simply a master with words, and how he chooses exactly the right ones to fit each song's structure and mood. "Stars have only so / many wishes though / they can tell what / we already know" (Bearing Witness), "You're all that I know, when the sun goes down / You're all that I know, when the sun comes rising like the devil in me / And when the morning breaks, it's sure to show; you're all that I know." "You are the one day, that tells me that someday, I get what you choose / You are the one thing, that gives me that something - Persuasion of You." "I can say that life is / much better today. I can see my path, though / clouds darken my way" (Adored). "She offers up fellowship, to those who come with broken hearts / yeah she laughs, in the crowds / but her heart, is all alone. / Welcome to her world..." (Georgia Girl). The latter song here is one of my very favorite Soul tunes to date. Beautiful melody, stirring lyrics, soaring guitars. Just an awesome song, and just one of an entire awesome CD. And I shouldn't forget to mention "Good Morning After All", a touching song Ed wrote after the passing away of his father. Or "Hollywood", as good a pop-rock song as you'd find anywhere on the radio these days.

It may be too much to expect Collective Soul to continue to record such solid and meaningful material, but I'm hopeful and confident they will. They've proven themselves, and are still around, long after many rock bands have crashed and burned. I'm so glad, and can't say I'm the least bit surprised. Keep up the good work, guys (and add Pittsburgh PA to your tour dates once in awhile, please?).
