Music Review: Imitation is the greatest form of flattery

I listened to the CD (Viva La Vida) several times, but struggled each time to like it. It seems to me that I like a smaller number of songs each time Coldplay makes a new album. What is happenning to them? I didn't quite like the CD "Viva La Vida" and found most of the songs lacking the "Coldplay" touch. The sounds, the lyrics and musical arrangements were awkward and forced at times. In a couple of songs, I felt that I was listening to another band. Finally, when I was listening to one of these songs, I had a flashback to Coldplay's performance at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2005, and particularly to what their frontman Chris Martin said about one of the emerging bands that performed in the festival that year.
Arcade Fire was the only band that Chris Martin mentioned at the openning of Coldplay's show that day. He praised Arcade Fire's musical talent and overall musical arrangements. He added jokingly that he was surprised and threatened by their performance and talent. I remember this vividly, because I agreed with his praise yet I was surprised that a well-known band like Coldplay is somewaht threatened to the point of admiration from a small band from Canada like Arcade Fire.
I never thought, however, that Coldplay admired Arcade Fire's musical talent to a point of imitation.
The kind of musical arrangement in Colplay's new LP is more suitable to the likes of Arcade Fire, but somehow feels awkward when played by Coldplay. Chris Martin's vocal, as unique as it is, was not suitable for such melodies.
You may or may not agree with my review. But, it felt really weird listenning the entire album. "Parachutes" is by far my favorite Coldplay CDs and one of my fav All-Time 10 Albums. "Viva La Vida" missed the mark by a long distance.

To say there has been a lot of anticipation for Coldplay?s fourth album, Viva La Vida, is an understatement. Having enlisted legendary leftfield producer Brian Eno, borrowed their album title from a painting by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and made tantalising remarks about sonic reinvention, the world has been curious (to say the least) to hear what the ?new? Coldplay might sound like. Viva La Vida definitely makes some departures from the band?s usual formula, which happens to be one of the most commercially successful rock-pop blueprints of recent years. The plangent chords, emotive melodies, stadium-rock rhythms and universal lyrical concerns remain, but Martin and co. have gone out on several limbs here, incorporating instrumental tracks ("Life In Technicolour"), using subtle North African and Latin elements ("Yes", "Strawberry Swing"), and overhauling previously strict verse-chorus-verse structures in favour of slightly more avant arrangements. The old Coldplay still shine through (see tracks like "Violet Hill" and the title song) but even their classic sound feels more muscular and confident. The band?s new flourishes, cosmetic and self-conscious as they may be, are enough to make Viva La Vida a welcome break from the old routine--Danny McKenna
