Music reviews of In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

Music Review: Absolutely beautiful
Rating: 5 Stars

The other day I was kind of stuck, debating what my favorite coheed album was. Sure, i'm a fanboy (although for good reason), but to me all four have their high points. But still, I came back to this one every time. I have never in my life (and I've listened to almost every genre of music, from emo to pop to classic rock to goth), heard an album with so many stand out songs. Every SINGLE song on the album could be a hit song to me, and sometimes it is really sad when people cannot appreciate it.

When I first started listening to them, I just managed to find them somewhere, and loved their catchy hooks and irresistable vocals without even knowing the lyrical content. And after several years, thoes continue to amaze me as I find new things in every song. But please, stop comparing him to rush. Not only has claudio never listened to rush, they are different people. And if you base a bands status only on how similar their lead singer sounds to other bands, well, we would still be stuck in the 70's, because every band cannot be completely unique. That being said, they are still the most original band I have ever heard, and I'd love any comments challenging that.

To the album, 5 stars is hardly enough. From the eerie but fitting (once you know the story) the ring in return, it launches into one of the most powerful songs in years, the title track, which is a hefty 8 minutes of almost metal sounding riffs and powerful lyrics. Cuts marked in the march of men, while not as mind blowing, is still powerful in itself, with coheed's trademark vocals and musical talent clearly evident. Three evils is one of the catchiest songs i've ever heard, hell I have to catch myself from singing "pull the trigger and the nightmare stops" in public. And no, if you are put off by emo lyrics, have no fear, this line fits very well into the story.

Then it cuts into the crowing. Even before I was able to decipher and understand the lyrics I still loved the song (which may be a weak point for some people, but clear and understandable lyrics are not always needed). And when you are a coheed fan, the lyrics simply put chills up your spine every single time you hear it. Then it switches from dark and heavy to light and poppy in blood red summer. Almost a completely different song, but so catchy you can't help but love it. Again, understanding the lyrics is a plus, but its great either way.

following that, the 3 velorium campers hit you in the face. As if you didn't know what was happening before, not knowing the backstory will leave you without a clue. However, all 3 individual songs are instantly classic. Faint of hearts is a fairly light but still retains their unique sound. Great to listen to by itself just when you're in a dull mood, or as a follow up to blood red summer. Backend of forever is actually rather emo, although considering the character being portrayed, it makes sense. Kind of depressing at points, but still amazingly catchy lyrics that will stay in your head for days. Al the killer, one of the best songs i've heard of all time. Probably scary at first when you hear the chorus, but its always fun to creep people out with lyrics they don't understand. Fairly dark and fast song, I just love it, you might not at first, but if you like the band you will love the song.

And now the hit, a favor house atlantic. Sure, sometimes a band's "hit" songs can be lacking in depth compared to the rest of the album in genre's such as this, but this does not disappoint. One of the catchiest guitar rhythm's out there, and just a fast and happy sounding song (almost contrary to the lyrics, which is one of the band's highest points, the ability to use the sound of the music to relate to the story). Either way, you will probably like this song even if you find the album pretentious (ie you cannot understand it). If you don't, why the hell are you reading a review about it?

finally (almost done) the next two (light and the glass, and the hidden 21:13), deserve a review, nay, an album to themselves. Even if only these songs were on the album, it would be worth buying. Over 16 minutes for both, which may seem intimidating, but they are by no means repetitive or boring. The light and the glass is at start a touchy ballad about a lost love, however by the end it goes into very progressive esque guitar parts combined with very moodly lyrics. Takes a while, but one of their best. And the hidden 21:13? Well, the only way to appreciate it is to listen to it. I actually didn't when I first bought the album, but now, well, I would probably rate it their top song in an album, or even a career of masterpieces.

Sure, most of this sounds like a crazy fan's overenthusiastic and uninformed praise for the album. In part it may be, and shame on me for not being a professional music critic, but I do like what music I like. Really, its best not to listen to reviews too much, as this band has reviews like this and the polar opposite. I'd suggest looking up their music on their website or on youtube, and if you like it starting with one or two of their cd's. I promise you won't be dissapointed if you are one who likes "progressive" rock, and aren't afraid to listen to a singer with a higher pitched voice then your average rock band, or a band with many long songs. Because even without the backstory, they still know how to make some damn catchy songs, and definitely worth trying.
