Music Review: Rock and Roll Straight from the Heart

Love is rabid steam-heat pumping, head-banging energy. Coco Cobra & the Killers has nothing but love. Straight from the heart. Straight from the hip. They sound like the Ramones a la 2006 with a pure, candid female lead. The only weakness I can hear in the music is strictly technical. The vocals are a bit overdriven on a few tracks. The lead, Viva Las Vegas blows past that flaw with machisma, a bravura honesty rarely seen in these studio-perfekt, politically correct days. Guitar, bass, keys, and drums rock! Raw lead vocal energy is the strength of Coco Cobra & the Killers' sound. This is the vein opened by Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. It's like Joan Jett distilled to a concentrated Bad Reputation. Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch Cherry Bomb sans versification. Viva's work has that kind of an explosive volcanic heart--she sings what she means and means what she sings. Coco Cobra & the Killers trumps all sentimental TV promo pablum-puke-pop. It works because it's pure. Rock and Roll needs leading women with the guts to deliver their power like the way Viva does leading Coco Cobra and the Killers.

Great Raunch 'n Roll with a stripper for a singer with members of Spider Babies and Exploding Hearts backing her ass up!---------FROM THE INSERT: Kevin and I were getting drunk on micro-brews and MSG-filled poopoo platters in the Magic Gardens, a seedy Chop Suey strip bar down the street from Mary's Club, when this naked girl in front of us decided to speak. She asked us to be her Johnny Thunders, and who were we to say no? She was stripping to the Stooges! Our first rehearsal was in our friend Adam's basement. He played drums. We hoped that Coco would give us a private show but she was all business, screaming and strumming her guitar. Kevin traded her some new pantie for her guitar, and the Killers were born. We played our first show at another Chinese restaurant across the Willamette River. Coco's boyfriend was booking Portland's punk dive, The Satyricon, so we played there, and we played at a Russian strip bar, Union Jacks, and the former strip bar, EJ's. During this time we were playing quite a few shows with a great band called the Pills. They took us into their basement for a few days and recorded the 12 songs on this disc. I sent the disc out to some record labels hoping to get back a few boxes of colored vinyl 7"s to sell at shows for beer money, but that never happend. When Adam died last year I dug out the CD and made a few copies for people who knew him. If you were around to see the naked drunken mess of Coco Cobra and the Killers, then you'll remember these sex tunes.
