Music Review: Good But Possibly Not What You Are Expecting

This collection of Cliff `Ukulele Ike' Edwards' work is good but it may not be what you were looking for. Be sure to listen before buying! Don't, for example, confuse this CD with the now out-of-print 1999 ASV Living Era CD with the same title. Many of the same songs but not the same recordings. I was disappointed at first but liked it better as I listened. But my reason for liking it may not work for you.
I've been a fan of "Ukulele Ike" since I ran across the LP "I'm A Bear In A Lady's Boudoir" (Yazoo L-1047) 30+ years ago. I'm fond of 1920's music in general and Edwards' snappy jazz and sentimental crooning is delightfully pleasing. I've collected what I can on 78's, vinyl, and CD's and keep hoping that someday a label such as Document, JSP, or Proper will issue an inclusive collection of Edwards' recordings. Until them I pick up what I can. (There's a good selection of his earliest recordings at redhotjazz.com in RAM format.)
This CD had several sides that I don't have on other collections so I ordered it. I'm familiar with Edwards' 1929 recording of Singing In The Rain and it took only a few seconds of listening to realize that this CD consists of later re-recordings of some of Edwards' best songs rather than the original recordings. Many of them are Edwards & ukulele alone and those with accompaniment are in a more modern style. Not what I was hoping to hear.
But as I listened one advantage occurred to me: on these recordings you can hear Cliff's ukulele playing much more clearly than on the original recordings. His voice and playing is in fine form and the higher fidelity and relative lack of accompaniment makes both stand out. The originals are great but the fidelity is lower (his earliest recordings are acoustic, i.e., into the horn onto disk) and the jazzy accompaniment, while outstanding, tends to drown out the ukulele. If, like me, you play ukulele but have been frustrated trying to pick up the nuance of Cliff's playing on the old recordings this is a good collection.
If you are a ukulele player hoping to learn Cliff's style you will like this collection. But if your goal is to hear why the guy behind the voice of "Jiminy The Cricket" was big star during the Roaring Twenties there are better collections. "With My Little Ukulele in My Hand" on Proper UK (much of Disc 2 is Edwards) or "Singin' In The Rain - The Best Of" from Amazon MP3 downloads would be a better choice.
