I don't get the reputation of Michelangeli in this music. While his technique is phenomenal (that has never been disputed), his approach is very literal and straightforward, without much imagination or interpretation. He never pushes these pieces, preferring to stay in a comfortable middle-gray area. He is not playful enough when playfullness is called for, nor furious enough when the music asks for fury. He has no remarkable observations about the works. He doesn't use them to push his own considerable technique to the limit. In the Sixth Prelude of Book I, for example, I recently attended a concert by Radu Lupu and here he stopped time, in a very Schnabelesque manner, in his handling of the line in this piece. We felt we were in a state of suspended animation. Arrau paints beautiful colors with his magnificent pedaling techniques in these works, Richter gives a virtuostic workout, and Gieseking is hell-bent-for-leather, if not always in the proper tradition of the French school. ("Debussy through Beethoven" is how one person put it.) Michelangeli plays all of the notes right, but it's as if I'm listening to a new music program from Microsoft: all perfection and no personality. What is he *saying* with this music? I can't tell.
