Music Review: Bolling's Best

While I am a fan of Claude Bolling's brand of French Jazz, this is the best of his suites for various combinations of soloists/virtuosi and Jazz combo (piano, bass, drums). And while I like the others, I can't listen to them more than once in very great whiles. But this one is conceived so beautifully (a set of dances - a typical suite structure, but so very new and fresh) and played so marvellously by Pinchas Zuckerman and Bolling that I could listen to it once a week - either for pleasure or to learn. There's always something new about it. The changing meters from 7/4, 5/4, remind one of Dave Brubeck; the crushing diminished seventh, ninth, thirteenth chords are all those wonderful pianists from the 1940s and 50s (and beyond); the dazzling bow work from Zuckerman is the pinnacle of perfection in lyricism and sheer joy of playing. He plays the viola, pizzicato in one number (just wonderful), and the finale, with its perpetuum mobile style of motion is technically a
"Hora" but is a whirling dervish of sound that builds and builds to a massive climax. I think it's a splendid work of music that can't be ignored.
