Music Review: Look Closely at Their Cover Photo!

Ciaramella is a very fine "alta capella" -- that is, a Renaissance wind band; the instruments they're holding in the photo are shawms, double-reed precursors, if you will, of oboes and other later double-reeds. Shawms were often played in ensembles with slide-trumpets and the narrow-bore trombones called 'sackbutts' in English. They were played as tower and procession instruments, and for any occasions that required their thrilling timbres and their sheer volume, roughly equal to a modern saxophone blown hard. There was a distinctive repertoire for such ensembles, including both homophonic dances and polyphonic fantasies, but the better class of "piffari" were musically literate and often borrowed from the repertoire of secular and sacred vocal music, as well as priding themselves on their improvisational skills. The same repertoire was available to 'closed' consorts of recorders of many sizes, from roughly five inches long to eight feet long. The music on this CD is from the 15th C courts and cities of Burgundy.
The members of Ciaramella play their shawms and brass about as well as any ensemble of living piffari, and when they're HOT, which is most of the time, they make an exhilarating sound. But they're even more proficient on their recorders, playing with superior balance and tuning and all the rhythmic precision this music requires. They're blessed by having a full range of consort recorders -- exact replicas of museum instruments -- made by Bob Marvin, whom one might identify as the Stradivarius of authentic recorders, tuned and fingered 'historically.' In other words, they're tootling through the Rolls Royces and Lamborghinis of their repertoire, and it's audible in the quality of their sound. The singers who perform with Ciaramella in concert and on this CD are not quite of the same virtuosity; they're pleasantly adequate to provide variety for the wind ensemble. Their tracks on this CD have some flaws but nowhere near enough flaws to detract from the excellence of the wind band.
This 'sound' is another facet of the music of Guillaume Dufay and his contemporaries. Indeed, there's some good evidence that Dufay and others poached as much of their musical idiom from the instrumentalists of their musical community as the instrumentalists poached repertoire from them. Johannes Martini was a 'tenorista', a wind instrument player, and Jacob Obrecht came from a family of trumpeters.
