Music reviews of GoodiesMusic Review: A Sweet Little Strong Debut Rating: 4 Stars
Ciara was the surprise R&B sensation of 2004. Just like Ashanti and other female singers, the young Ciara came aboard the musical ship back in 2004 and has found top ten hit after top ten hit. I was somewhat reluctant to get her CD until listening to snippets for the third time and realizing that most of the music was not just typical, throw-away, teen stuff. The first two singles did not really appeal to me at all. I must admit that while Ciara can dance a little, her moves do somewhat seem off especially when looking at other dancers around her. Also, her vocals are somewhat limited. That is why I was surprised that Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston are her vocal influences. It does seem that with time, her voice is improving which is a good thing, but the CD is good.
Goodies-Produced by Lil Jon and featuring Petey Pablo, her first single and her first single to reach #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart, this mid-tempo with the heavy, typical Lil Jon bassline and the high vocals during the verses took Summer 2004 by storm. The MIA Petey Pablo gives a nice rap to open up the song. For me, the song does nothing. I guess it is because I am a male, but I was never fond of the song. B+
1,2 Step-Produced by Jazze Pha and featuring Missy Elliott, I like this song a little better than the first single. This was her second single to go #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart, and it is something about the dance move that this song features: the 1, 2 Step that makes it stand out. Missy gives a good rap, and it almost sounds like she produced it until you look at the credits for the CD. A-
Thug Style-Produced by Jazze Pha, this mid-tempo is a nice, sweet little song about Ciara liking the "thug style" of her lover or the one whom she admires. It is not threatening with its contents, and Ciara gives an innocence to the song that makes it work with her airy vocals. The chorus is catchy. I thought this was going to be the fourth single, as I heard it played on a few radio stations, but I believe it was pulled. It is a very nice atypical, typical R&B song. A+
Hotline-Produced by Shondrae "Bangladesh" Crawford, this uptempo with the synthesizer and the weird sound to it is one that I generally skip because it is disposable pop. It is one of those songs that is commercial because it where radio leans, but it is not a good song at all. It was a contender for a single, and it probably would have worked well on Rhythmic and Pop formats, but it is a song that I do not like because it says nothing and it is disposable. B-
Oh-Produced by Andre Harris and Vidal Davis, featuring Ludacris, of the first three singles, this one is my favorite because it sounds like no other song with this heavy, drone, almost monster like element and the free-flowing, almost rap-sung verses. The chorus is also catchy. The ever-energetic Ludacris also brings a different edge to the song. It was a really hot video. The song is like the slowed-down, more mature cousin of "Thugstyle." A+
Pick up the Phone-Produced by Jazze Pha, sounding somewhat like Hotline in that it is discussing a phone, this song is essentially throw-away pop music, but it works because the tempo is slowed down and it has a catchy chorus/hook with some nice background vocals throughout. I also like the breakdown in the song. It has many elements to it that makes it work. It is not good that a few people I know use this as a voice message, so it is a slap-in-the-face in that context. A+
Lookin' at You-Produced by Jazze Pha, I really have nothing to say about this because I usually skip over it. It is not a bad song, but nothing about it stands out, and in this musical landscape to hook attention something about has to stand out. The beat is somewhat pedestrian. Not a bad song, but not one of the standouts either. B
Ooh Baby-Produced by Flash Technology, this is a song similar to the latter, but it works because it has an addictive, fresh beat and a nice chorus/hook that gives it more depth, an extra punch that the latter song was simply missing. This could work as a single as it has much commercial appeal to it, and Ciara's innocent, airy vocals fit the song extremely well. A+
Next to you-Produced by R. Kelly, this has that R. Kelly, JS-sound to it, and it works because you can envision Ciara being that innocent girl wanting to go further but not wanting to because she is not ready. The song has a lot of contained sexual energy to it which comes through with the almost-lullaby like production, the vocals and especially the lyrics which portray the theme the best. A nice R. Kelly production. A+
And I-Produced by Adonis, Ciara's fourth single which unfortunately has not really picked up much reaction on radio formats, is the closest thing to a ballad on the CD. It shows Ciara's vocal weaknesses somewhat as she does not take the song to the soaring Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey or Patti LaBelle heights, but she does show that singers with limited vocals can pull off ballads well too because of her understated, quiet interpretation of the song mixed with the rousing background vocals and the quiet production. The song deserves to do better on radio because it is a beautiful, peaceful ballad that Ciara does considerably and surpsingly well. A+
Other Chicks-Produced by French, this slow jam R&B song that is just soaked in the music which almost sounds like something from the 80s, as Ciara portrays a more sexier, wilder side of her personality telling a guy to forget about the other chicks because she wants to be the main one. The production of the song works well. The hook is catchy, and the song is different from most of what we are hearing. It has a nice energy to it, and the flow of the verses is also a standout. A
The Title-Produced by Jasper, and containing samples of "Love Ballad" performed by L.T.D., probably one of my favorite songs on the CD as it has a nice interweaving of old school R&B and modern R&B. The song is pretty commercial, as it could be released as a single. The music just coasts along as it is a laidback song with energy. The arrangment of the vocals from start to finish is also a strong aspect of the song. Ciara's vocals are also on-point. A very nice, touching song about Ciara wanting the "title" of being his lady, his girl and potentially his wife. Watch out, Bow Wow because she wants the title. A+
Overall, a great CD that has sold over 2 million copies. It is not just the standard music, but it has a few surprises and even more so, it shows Ciara's potential. While she may not have the voice with the most range, she knows how to use her limited range and use the skill of interpretation to adequately convey emotions in songs, which is a skill that many "great" singers sometimes lack. I am looking forward to her sophomore effort.
