Music Review: Master of the Flugelhorn

Wow, a 2002 Chuck Mangione release with no reviews? That's a real surprise. He can't have fallen from the pop music landscape entirely, I hope. This is an excellent compilation from one of the leading interpreters of mellow, fusion jazz during the '70s and '80s, right up there with Weather Report. Land of Make believe was a huge hit and got quite a bit of airplay. The inimitable Esther Saddlefield provided the vocals. It's message may sound a bit syrupy these days, but it's still a classic, with it's trademark Mangione slow build and excellent orchestration. The other cuts on the disc will be familiar to Mangione fans and they won't be disappointed with the recording values here. Every instrument comes through with dulcet clarity. This is a very good package at a great price. I hope some Amazon customers give it a try.BEK
