Music Review: For Farinelli Fans

Among many people, the prize-winning film "Farinelli" has become somewhat of a cult favorite. A fascination with castrati and with the great era of Baroque opera seems to have grown even greater over these last twenty years. Even though the film is hardly biographical (perhaps only 10% has to do with the real man), it is a memorable film spectacal that holds one's attention.
Understandably, the producers were concerned about keeping the film within typical theater length; therefore, the arias in the soundtrack were truncated. Consequently, for one to hear an entire aria and to appreciate better the Baroque aria form, this CD is a must. For the most part, complete arias were recorded prior to editing for the film (Porpora's "Alto Giove," as an exception, has only the first A section recorded, the B section and repeated A not recorded.)
Because Farinelli (perhaps the greatest opera singer of all times) was able to sing 3 1/2 octaves, the film producer and Sony technicians melded the voices of a countertenor and a female soprano. This clever idea was fairly successful, although informed listeners with acute hearing are quick to realize that the resulting "voice" does not approximate a castrato voice, especially Farinelli's, as described in detail by his contemporaries. The two voices used, unfortunately, were only average and also typical of 20th-century vocal technique, which lacks the precision and voci bianché (as one finds with countertenor Andreas Scholl and soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr in other recordings)that is required for Baroque vocal music and for an approximation of the castrato voice.
Despite the imperfections of the voices, I am very gratified that the complete pre-edit soundtrack is available on CD, and it has become a favorite of mine, well worth the purchase.
