This CD brings together arias by Haydn, Handel, Jommelli and Gluck. They are arias sung by the sorceress Armida, a popular figure in Baroque and Classical operas. The orchestra and sonics are excellent. The singer has a bit of a problem to reach some of the high notes, but is otherwise fine. This would normally rate 4 stars, but the selection of French vs. Italian arias, and the stylistic difference between Handel's "Armida abbandonata" with the other works make for a disjointed recital. The selections, taken one composer at a time, are fine, but the mix doesn't gel.
