Music Review: One of the veteran Pregardien's nicest Schubert outings, if a bit lightweight

Few singers are as experienced in Lieder as Christoph Pregardien, now 55, and he has his devotees (the lead reviewer must lead the parade, given his rapturous reception of this CD). I have sat on the fence for a long time, but this 2009 account of Schwwanengesang has several things going for it. First, it's sung by a tenor, which is unusual, and a bit tricky when we get to the heavy weather of the Heine group. Pregardien's voice is substantial enough to encompass most of those difficulties. Second, he has really beautiful accompaniments from Andreas Staier, on a very good-sounding fortepiano that is well recorded and not buzzy.

It may seem that I am telegraphing a huge "but," and yet I'm not. As usual, Pregardien's style is polished and lyrical rather than deeply felt. Like Andreas Schmidt, another Lieder veteran blessed with a gorgeous voice, Pregardien lets his honeyed tones do much of the work. I felt involved in quite a few songs, however, and for a listener who is more sympathetic to a rather continual tone of soft pathos, this might be an outstanding reading. But my head is filled with the far more gripping accounts by Werner Gura, Bryn Terfel, and Thomas Quasthoff. Compared to them, Pregardien is a comparative lightweight.

The program contains more than Schwanengesang, and the groupings are well explained by the Gramophon'es reviewer, as follows:

They preface the quasi-cycle with the bleak, windswept Rellstab setting "Herbst", which Schubert unaccountably omitted from the Rellstab sequence that opens Schwanengesang. Then, at they end, they follow "Die Taubenpost" - always in danger of jarring after the Weltschmerz of the Heine group - with other, complementary, Seidl settings, ending with the blissful nocturnal homecoming of "Tm Freien"
