Music reviews of American Inquisition (Dig)Music Review: A return to deathrock form.... Rating: 5 Stars
First off, let me say that I was really excited to hear about this album coming out after such a long period of silence from Valor and company. Secondly, after hearing the samples of Stop Bleeding On Me and Angels And Drugs I had the feeling that this was going to be a really great album, and a return to form for the band. The album is of the concept variety focusing on the ills of this society: drugs, GW Bush, evangilical relegion and how self cenetered society is. It is more deathrock than anything they have done in a very, very, long time and it seems like they have moved away from metal a bit, which is a good thing! Metal fans who like their last few albums might be dissappointed because it sounds like their more old school deathrock material. People such as myself, who enjoy their older work more, will most likely be thrilled.
.Water Into Wine - A Hail To The Chief snippet twines into Bush swearing into office, which then turns into a military drum tattoo number that includes heavy guitars and lovely violin playing. All about how religion is used to justify war against people. Very political lyrics which are quite relevent.
.Stop Bleeding On Me - The guitar work really, really reminds me of Valor's 1980's playing style which is refreshing to once again hear. Also there is heavy bass throughout. I think that this song is about people who put others on the 'cross' so to speak, in order to make themselves feel better. I love the lyrics.
.Narcissus Metamorphosis Of - Has a great bass line and 'spooky' organs. Again, the guitar playing is quite old school deathrock sounding. All about how people in society today tend to only think of themnselves and not of others. A great statement about what is going on in terms of US foreign policy right now. Would be a great song to dance to in a deathrock/gothic rock club.
.Victim X - This song is pretty damned cool. It has electronic dance beats intersperced with heavy guitar tracks. It's about how Christianity tends to make people into victims, because they point out a person's sins and repress 'fun' type behaviour.
.To Disappear - It has a great organ intro, complete with vocal choir, then a heavy bass line joins in, finally all hell breaks loose. I think that this is about how people feel lost in this society due to being filled with fear,etc..
.Dexter Said No To Methadone - Trippy track. I love the violin, and as always, the bass track. It's about drug use, obviously.
.Angels And Drugs - The lyrics and guitar playing are really beautiful in this one, and it's a slower song. Another song about drugs, but I feel that the word 'drugs' can be viewed more widely than pills,etc... A drug can be anything that a person craves.
.Seduction Thy Destruction - This song is straight up old school deathrock. Lovely deep bass and steady dirge like beat rounded up by a distorted guitar. The guitar work sounds very similar to the work done on Atrocities. About the destruction that drugs cause and the lyrics seem really personal. Quite possibly my favorite song on the album.
.Worship Along The Nile - This song has a very heavy bass line, Middle Eastern rythms and some old school deathrock guitar playing. A dirty ditty about a certain part of the female anatomy sung by Maitri. The woman has a sexy voice.
.See You In Hell - Again, heavy bass and a great deal of deathrock guitar playing style. This is about evangelical hypocracy and how it attacks the freedom of people to live life as they choose. Great lyrics.
.Surviving Armageddon - The guitar sounds a bit like Snakes Of Christ by Danzig, which isn't a bad thing at all, and it is a bit heavier than most of the other songs. All about how the whole Armageddon myth is used as a scare tactic.
.The Last Thing - Quite a suprise! A very heavy deathrock of a dirge song. Would be great to dance to in a deathrock club. Honest! All about the lies we are told by the government and the media, and how important it is to wake up and not believe them.
.XIII - An instrumental strung together with quotes by Bush, about Bush, evangelicals talking about politicians performing Drudic and Satanic rituals, religious money scams,etc... This pulls all of the ideals and ideas of the album together and is a hoot to listen to.
This is a great album and gives me hope that Valor has decided to return to his deathrock/gothic rock roots. If you haven't liked any of Christian Death's more recent albums give this one a listen because it sounds nothing like them.
