Music Review: Still a Chris fan - but buyer beware - "contrived" live album

I bought this album without having sampled it first because I am a fan of Chris's music and didn't think I could possibly be disappointed. I believe Chris accomplished what he set out to do with this CD. He created a very different Christmas album that was intended to capture and reflect the live worship experience. The original songs are very good and the arrangements of the traditional songs are good as well. I'm not bothered by the fact that the music is not typically "Christmas" sounding. That's part of what makes this album unique and different. What does bother me is the fact that I didn't realize I was buying a "contrived" live album. Nowhere on the cover do you get the idea it's a live album. It simply says "Christmas Songs of Worship" but it should have said something like "A Christmas live worship experience" to get the idea across. So in that sense it was disappointing simply because I felt it was deceiving to not know what I was actually buying. I used the word contrived earlier because nowhere in the credits does it mention a live recording location - only studios are credited. This leads me to believe that this was a "contrived" live recording done in the studio with overdubs. Four of the songs actually do end without clapping and crowd noise. In some cases the clapping is delayed almost until the music has faded. That doesn't typically happen with a live audience and strongly supports the notion that this was not a true live recording. Live recordings tend to wear thin pretty quick with crowd noise but you can tolerate it when it's actually recorded live on location and you get to hear the artist actually performing in a live setting. This just didn't need to be a live album and for me it could have been better had it not been "live". I agree with another reviewer who said "I don't want the clapping and cheering. I just want the song". The other element that gets old is the constant use of choir vocals on nearly every track. I think it would have been better if Chris had recorded a studio version of this first and then released a live version later. There's a reason hardly anyone has ever released a "live" christmas album - it's a little awkward to say the least and goes against what we've come to expect in Christmas music. I realize the very things I don't like about this album are exactly what some may find delightful. I do like Chris and will continue to be a huge fan but for me this was an odd juxtaposition attempting live worship and christmas combined. Don't get me wrong the songs are great but I would have preferred true studio versions first. "Come thou long expected Jesus" is particularly lackluster in light of a version by Jamie Jamgochian that I much prefer. I think this album will find a unique place in most anyone's christmas music collection but be forewarned as to the somewhat deceptive marketing of a "contrived" live album.
