Music reviews of How to Grow a Woman From the Ground

Music Review: Pick a Thile .. any Thile.. They're all here
Rating: 4 Stars

How you react to this new offering from the amazing Mr. Thile depends on which of his multiple manifestations appeal. I liked most of what's here, so I gave the album a 4 out of 5......

First, there is Thile, the most proficient and technically masterful mandolin player on the planet. Try any of his own instrumental compositions on this album and you will get faster and hotter licks than anything you can find elsewhere. The Beekeeper has the most impressive portions of tightly packed, blazingly fast and perfectly struck notes. Beekeeper is just pure Thile, the best song on the album. Wow! Watch at Breakdown is a kind of jazz, rock, bluegrass appetizer. The Eleventh Reel is the perfect ending to the album, brisk, light, uplifting, joyous (and just nominated for a Grammy). Full credit for this group. In fact I would have bought this album just to hear Thile's playing on the instrumentals.

Then, there is Thile the wounded singer of sad ballads. I can see these appealing to some Nickel Creek fans who are under 25. These songs are mostly solo pieces and minor key in nature. "Stay Away" and "I'm Yours if you want me" are fine if you have a broken heart and want an audio shoulder to cry on. The title cut (How to grow a woman from the ground) is much better. It's sad, but it's also funny and plaintive. Any guy who has ever tried to recover from the loss of a great love will enjoy the imagery and pathos in this fine tune. Heart in a cage is somewhere in between and has some nice harmony singing. This whole group of songs earns a minus 1/2 from a perfect score.

Next we have Thile the collaborator. He has worked with so many GREAT musicians of his father's generation and has decided to bring together some really great and younger players to accompany his own talent. Noam Pikelny on banjo is the best and shows skill and musical sense approaching that of Mr. Thile himself. The "band" does a number of songs much closer to bluegrass, including the two instrumentals not written by Chris: O Santo De Polvora and Cazadero. These are well played, but more conventional that the original CT songs. The group also covers some much older bluegrass tunes, complete with yodeling and vocal ranges outside Chris's normal range. We can hope Chris the collaborator builds something lasting with these guys, especially Pilkney. I liked this group of songs plenty: full credit!

Next, there is Thile, the producer of his own records. Some day when he is settled down and a happier man, he may actually be good at this, but he makes some production decisions that show a real lack of professionalism. Standing away from the mikes is an especially bad decision and especially for Chris himself who can hit the notes, but has a skinny voice that needs amplification (if you doubt the value of good miking, just listen to the "How to grow a band" concert on Woodsongs and notice how much better Chris sounds with a mike in his face). Then, there is the decision to put long breaks in the middle of songs. This is done too often and becomes sort of annoying. Minus one half for this aspect.

Finally, there is Thile the composer. And for those of us who have been following his work, we want more... particularly the instrumentals. Full credit for ANY album that has at least three Chris Thile original instrumentals on it.

So that's how we get to 4 of 5. There is enough here to encourage me to keep buying and keep hoping for another album like "Not all who wander are lost..."

What goes around, comes around. As the resident rock star in Nickel Creek (contrasting with the trio's more reserved Watkins siblings), mandolinist Chris Thile has sent his music soaring in surprising directions from its bluegrass base. Though this solo release finds him dipping into the songbooks of the White Stripes ("Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground") and the Strokes ("Heart in a Cage"), much of the music sticks closer to tradition than Thile has in recent years. Among the highlights are an uptempo romp through Gillian Welch's "Wayside (Back in Time)," a pretty fair yodel on Jimmie Rodgers's "Brakeman's Blues," the close harmonies of the bluesy "If the Sea Was Whiskey," and Thile's original "You're an Angel and I'm Gonna Cry," classic country weeper. Five of the fourteen cuts are instrumental, with the opening "Watch 'at Breakdown" combining bluegrass instrumentation and jazzy sophistication, and "The Beekeeper" giving Thile's fingers a chance to fly. --Don McLeese
