Music reviews of Deceiver

Music Review: Not Nickle Creek, but still a masterpiece
Rating: 5 Stars

Chris Thile's "Not All Who Wander Are Lost," one of the early review on this site, was one of those albums that came out of nowhere and made me buy it even though I typically loathe the genre. In its case, the genre was blugrass, and mandolin wunderkind Chris Thile absolutely transcended my distaste for instrumental, classicalish music just by virtue of the sheer talent that went into it.

When I heard that Chris's new album, "Deceiver," was coming out soon, I was thrilled. When I heard that it was not an instrumental album, but rather a mostly vocal album in which Thile alone played all of the 25 instruments, wrote all the music/lyrics, and sang all the vocals, I was awestruck. When I found out that in the album he wandered way beyond bluegrass and explored rock, jazz, pop, and just about everything else, I filled out a preorder form and paid extra for express shipping.

When the doorbell rang this afternoon, the official release date for the album, I dropped my game of Counter-Strike: Source (which I am contemplating writing a review for) and bolted for the doorway. Sure enough, there it was; a small UPS package marked "Extremely Urgent" and maid out to Kyle Pflug. Either my CD, or a draft notice.

Luckily, it was my CD.

One of the things I read about "Deceiver" was a comment by Chris that he had worked extremely hard to pack each song to the brim; to make it so that each listening brough new insights and a new appreciation for the song. That is absolutely true. The first time I heard "Wrong Idea," the title track, I was intrigued but at the same time weirded out. Now, I'm listening to it for at least my tenth time, and I love the song. Sure, it's bizarre; the rhythm is irregular, the sounds are at times cacophonous, the lyrics are a bit offsetting at first, but each time you hear it you like it more and more.

One thing I should mention before going further is that the liner notes on this album are simply the best I've ever seen. The lyrics to all the songs are carefully handwritten in such a fashion that you can clearly see where Chris wants the emphasis, where the emotion is, even outside of the song. Listening to the whole CD while reading the liner notes in sync with it, as is my habit on the first listening to a new CD, is truly a treat with "Deceiver."

Anyway, "Wrong Idea" is not my favorite track, but I've grown to love it. Some of the lyrics are amazing;

"I never thought it would come to this,
My reputation will be missed
by all the dads who introduce me to their girls saying

'I HAVE GOT A GREAT IDEA!

You're so different from most guys.'

Now that's just a wishful lie, because I'm not so different anymore--
A revolving door you came through
and though you're first--even if you're last--it wont' change
that I'm not me, 'cause I met a pretty girl last night."

Of course, just a transcription fails to get the point all the way across. Thile's tone of voice, choice of music, discrepencies in rythme--all of it contributes to pauses, confusions just where they make lyrical sense.

"Wrong Idea" isn't the only good song. In fact, the second track, "On Ice," is one of my favorites. It begins (and persists throughout) with a mandolin theme that is nothing short of haunting (and amazing). The lyrics are still just about the best they could be;

"We stayed in touch but the touch I was wanting from her came from girls that scared me to little to love
So all of the thoughts I thought I might tell her turned into songs that until now she's never heard of."

Thile even swears in track--something which, coming from a member of Nickel Creek, carries a tremendous weight and has far more impact than the same word could coming from anybody else. Think of your grandmother dropping the f-bomb -- it commands that kind of attention.

The eight vocal tracks are broken up by two instrumental "pallette cleansers," "Waltz for Dewayne Pomeroy" and "Jessamyr's Reel." Both of these are excellent, though "Waltz" is surreal and depressing, especially after you look up Dewayne Pomeroy's story on the internet.

Track six, "I'm Nowhere and You're Everything," is another masterpiece. The opening to the song sets down and incessant rythm which is carried through to the end. The first lines,

"It's not yet six; the sun's not up
'Father, take away this cup,'
Is running through my throbbing head,
'Cause if he had, I'd be dead."

set the pace for a song woven with intricacies and biblical references, and even some darkish humor ("Damn this cup, give me a bowl / If I can't saturate my soul...").

And that's not even the beginning. I haven't listened to all the tracks enough to catch their intricacies and beauties, but of the 10 tracks, more than half are breathtakingly outstanding. My first listening to the whole album left me bewildered and not sure if I liked it or not. However, a few days later, I'm convinced that it's absolutely brilliant. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen some more.

4) Waltz for Dewayne Pomeroy
5) Empire Falls
6) I'm Nowhere And You're Everything
