Music Review: Needed a one-star review.

As a person raised in a church that has more than enough CCM fans in its youth group, I have heard Chris Rice touted left and right as one of the greats. I have over 200 "Christian" albums but had never gotten around to listening to Mr. Rice. My tastes are all over the map when it comes to music. In my car right now I believe I have Guster, Tom Waits, Meat Loaf, The Cure, Ryan Adams, The Clash, Extol(Christian death metal), and even a Robbie Williams CD. I'll listen to anything once, and Rice's album titles and covers seemed interesting enough, so I had always planned on giving him a listen someday. A few weeks ago I was at work and this song came on the system that caught my attention. The lyrics were awful, and the sing-songy chorus was cliched and unfortunately stuck in my head. I would be watching TV later in the afternoon and "life gave me lemonade and I can't imagine why" would start repeating as though my subconscious was punishing me for something. "Beneath a tangerine sky"? But I thought it was a "sunny day." "Why would the sky be tangerine?" I wondered to myself. It sounded like something Jack Johnson wrote and gave to Hootie and the Blowfish to perform. Or maybe just Hootie solo. Anyway, when I found out it was Chris Rice I was very dis-heartened. I listened to this album, and... it was awful. The lyrics are very unoriginal and the music sounds uninspired. This album sounds to me like the sort of thing that gets made when an artist has reached that point in his career where the ambition and excitement of his early days have faded and songwriting has become more mechanical. We all reach that point in our careers where doing the best job becomes secondary to just getting the job done, and that's how I'd typify this album. Some of you seem to be die-hard Chris Rice fans who will blindly love everything he does, and some of you seem to be people who prefer the same old same old over new and interesting. Obviously this album is for you. A few of you, however, seem to be Chris Rice fans who are subjective enough to admit that he's dropped off a bit. These are the people I'd side with. It hasn't deterred me from wanting to listen to his earlier stuff, but I'm a little skeptical now. I only gave it one star because there were way too many four and five star reviews. It doesn't deserve either. It deserves a very middle-of-the-road 2.5, which seems to be what it aims for anyway.
