Music Review: "Let's Call It Good": No Sophomore Jinx for Choklate

I purchased Choklate's self-titled album Choklate after hearing the wonderful track "Gettin' is Good" being featured on one of Atlanta's music aficionado's, EJ Flavors, website. It stayed in rotation for two years--then, periodically, re-added it to rotation after that. From the beginning to end, I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Three years later, she drops her follow-up To Whom It May Concern and unlike many of her predecessors, the so-called sophomore jinx can never be leveled at this gem.
Now, unlike many other reviewers of this album, I did not pick up this release until the end of February of 2010. That's my fault. If I had picked this album up when it was first released on April 21, 2009, it would have been in rotation for close to a year by now. I have not stopped listening to it since the first day that I got it--it is incredible.
My favorites so far are "Sun's Out," "Grown Folk," "To Whom It May Concern," "6.8 Billion," "Serious?" "One'aY'all," "I'm Sorry," "The Tea," and the "Ain't It Funny Interlude." The key word in that sentence is "favorites" because I do not feel that I ever have to skip a single track on this album. One note on the "Ain't it Funny Interlude," I really wish it were a whole song. It is a brilliant articulation of acceptance, despair, and the quiet question of what will come next--my favorite piece from her from both albums and it's only 1:38 seconds long.
If you are looking for an album to enjoy its entirety, I strongly suggest you pick this one up. Since To Whom It May Concern will be in rotation for the next couple of years, like its predecessor, I should be able to move seamlessly into her next release that I pray will certainly happen. Support artists who care about artistry; Choklate is overflowing with the center of art's true intentions.
